Thanks, not planning to make too many pub visits as my kids are both under 21 so probably not good form if my wife and I abandon them to go for a few beers

my plan if i win the lottery is to jet to new york for the weekend, stay somewhere with a balcony overlooking central park, and go to MOMA to see the jackson pollocks. other than that (i've been to new york for a week years ago), i'd just spend my time walking around looking up - it's a truly incredible environment to wander around in. first time i went as a 17 year old on a summer work programme we went to tom's diner on broadway.
nonchalent waiter took eight orders without writing a thing down and served it all up perfectly. i had toasted bagel with cream cheese and grape jelly, and just felt like i'd arrived properly! fell asleep that night in a columbia university dorm with the window open listening to gun shots and ambulance sirens!!

If you are into photography, a visit to B and H photo is fun. Lots of gear to see and buy. 420 9th Ave Mid Town as I recall.

If you have time, West Point Military Academy is north of the city about an hour drive, beautiful drive and there is a lot of history at the academy and they have a great museum.

Enjoy your trip to NY and don't forget to try the pretzels from a street vendor.

As a postscript to this thread, I'm just back from 5 nights in New York. My goodness there is a lot to do there, I felt we could have easily filled another week.

Some of the things we did - a cruise right around the island of Manhattan, cycling tour of Central Park, the Observation deck of the One World Trade Centre (Freedom Tower), the 9/11 Museum, Top of the Rock (Rockerfeller Centre) at night, went to see "School of Rock" on Broadway, the High Line, Grand Central Station Terminal, Ellen's Stardust Diner, Macy's. What a great city and I could go on at length about each of the above and various other amazing sights and sounds of the city. It is an expensive trip though, the main thing I found that really blows the budget is food and drink which is very pricey...even for a coffee and sandwich in an average café right through to a steak in a nice restaurant

The watches...well I actually surprised myself by not being that bothered for looking at watches. Partly as I didn't want to bore the family when there were so many other things that we wouldn't get the chance that often to do again and partly as we didn't really stumble across that many. There was a pre-owned Rolex section in Macy's but the selection was quite uninspiring. So I didn't buy any watches?.....well one day we were passing a fairly non descript jeweller so I dragged them all in for a browse....and of course inevitably I have come back with a new addition to the collection (new thread to follow shortly) :problem:

^^^it was a great trip Lindsay. Yes Central Park is amazing, I was surprised how large it is. A Brazilian guy who has worked in the park for about 35 years, doing firstly horse and carriage and then bike tours took us round. His knowledge of the park was amazing and he seemed to know every second person! There are some really quiet spaces in the park amongst trees and streams that would make you think you are in the countryside, not in such a bustling city. There is also an open air theatre that performs Shakespeare all summer...tickets are free, but you can imagine the queues...sorry lines  Then you have the MoMA, Strawberry Fields and many other interesting areas of the park. You could probably spend a whole week just exploring the park alone

^^^sorry Steve/Steve for keeping you in suspense, I've now posted the watch purchase in another thread :)
