Nature is just weird

Post by what-time-is-it »

Any thoughts on what's happened here?

Opened a patio door this morning to be greeted by this dead wasp? that has left a weird residue next to the victim.
I'm sure somebody on here can come up with an explanation - it appears that we have sprayed it with fly spray, but this happened overnight with no spray deployed.

Odd indeed and no reasoning from me, sorry. But as an aside I’ve seen virtually no wasps this year in SW Ireland. Aug and Sept is their time when they make their presence felt. Could count how many I’ve seen on two hands.

Have you seen this before?

A bird flew into this window and apparently the ghost left behind is a kind of powder that helps waterproof the feathers.
Maybe your wasp went splat and spread a spray of pollen around it? Or some other kind of dust associated with the wasp’s body??

I think that's a hoverfly rather than a wasp, but suspect it's a victim of condia, a fungal infection which infects the bug, spreading a shower of mould spores when it dies.

Wow - that’s quite gruesome...
