Dropped off my MINI for ceramic coating today.
Going to cost a pretty penny but it will look amazing and just in time for our road trip to the UK this Thursday.

At three weeks old, it developed a fault in the Adaptive Cruise Control. It took VW NZ a further SEVEN WEEKS to repair it (which took about an hour!!!!!!)
At least they arranged a hire car for some of that time. The RAV4 evinced how good our X3 is....

What in all that is holy is ceramic coating?

Are you going for Delft, Dresden, Worcester style etc....

May I suggest a nice Clarice Cliff if you are looking for something a little different?

I assume that is a different process to the covering your car in meringue that you did a few months ago?

ACC can be a tricky little blighter, from my experience with it on a couple of Skodas. Almost too clever for its own good.

Problem is, the CC wouldn't work while the ACC was broken, and cruise is ESSENTIAL on Kiwi roads with VERY zealous traffic police who will report you at 3Kph over the 100 limit!

Ceramic coating is the latest thing that car dealers are pushing under the auspices of the like of Williams F1 to give your car a bullet proof protective coating.
It is good stuff and does protect the paintwork BUT the dealers absolutely rip the arse out of it: the kit is about £45 and a valet company will charge £55 to apply it.
The rest is cream off for the dealer ( usually £200 - £300  )

I know this how? The company next door to us is a car valeters who have the local Volvo contract and they are doing these regularly.

My father in law recently bought a new Yeti and the dealer offered the ceramic treatment for £300. Our friendly next door valet company took the car straight from the dealer and did the protective coating inside and out for £45 using spare product from main dealer cars they do.

I'm sure the cost price for a 'ceramic coating' e.g. Autoglym Lifeshine* is nearer £100 than £45 Paul, whilst I agree a dealer's price is around £250/£300.

Do remember though that it, with Autoglym Lifeshine at least, includes protection for the paintwork, upholstery and windows, and Autoglym then provide a Lifetime (five year) Warranty on the paintwork and upholstery*. Additionally, the dealer would, understandably I'm sure, like to make a profit on this Aftersales item, and pay the Salesman a smidgen of commission.

No doubt your Father-in-Law is grateful for having his Yeti looking resplendent, as is mine (I had it Lifeshined when new and again last year), but I doubt he will have any warranty on it.

Guy,
I bow to your superior knowledge on this - my insight comes from a third party who, by his own admission and having spent 30 years in it, hates everyone in the motor trade !

What I will say, however, is that I am clearly in the wrong game - if only I could make 100% profit on materials that I buy in and sell on whilst getting a third party to install I would be looking to buy my first Caribbean island by now!

In the construction world 20% is doing well, and people still expect a lifetime warranty :?
