Totally unrelated, but it appears there's an evaporative refrigeration system called the 'Frig-o-matic'. In maritime applications the systems are coined "Frig-o-boat".

Now there's a search term I'd be wary of googling in polite company!

Well, this is entirely related given that the thread has expanded way beyond watches!
Maybe the -o-matic thing is just an advertisers hook to get our brains to remember a brand. Doesn’t have to mean anything and the stupider it sounds the better. Just like the stupid earworm jingles that you hate but recognise anyway...

The mere mention without context of a “Ladymatic” might well prove fecund ground for a gentleman’s imagination to run biomechanical riot.

Yet here it is, courtesy of Omega, no less. They really should know better!

Almost bought one of these just because it’s a laser matic laser beam watch by a company called Jean-Luc Picard... (or maybe it was his brother who made the watches  )

The first automatic chronographs were of course called Chronomatic.

But nonetheless emblematic of automatic time-keeping. John Harwood has a bit to answer for, speaking retromatic-ally.
