^^^ I know SQUALE means shark in Italian, but if you rearrange the letters it spells SQUEAL, which you might well do if you saw one swimming near you. This means it is anagrammatic.

Personally, I’m not immensely thrilled by these portmanteau names. Others may like them, so I suppose it is fair to say that they are marmite, divisive, or perhaps even schismatic.

I'm pretty sure we had a twin-tub washing machine called a Hoovermatic when I was a child.

My first camera was an "Instamatic", which took a film cassette as opposed to the 35 mm rolls of film. It had a fixed focus lens of debatable quality and the pictures were small, square and very poor. It used disposable flash cubes with 4 shots per cube, They didn't work well.

I wonder if Matic was just added to any old thing to make it sound technological and modern and exciting? Maybe like we add e- to all sorts of stuff even if we don’t know what the e stands for but it makes us think of snazzy internet tech??

Certainly, but when you think a little it goes deeper than that.

There was a fashion for adding O and EX onto (sometimes) Latinate or pseudo Latinate words to make brand names.

Kleenex. Then there was “Dur…” (long lasting).

Brillo. Brasso.

And of course the syllable “ROL” (and variants) occurs in words for clocks and watches in numerous languages. ROL-EX? Makes you wonder. :-k
