Marketing BS to make you *not* buy a watch

Post by RichM »

This advert in the paper yesterday just makes me cringe and actively not want to buy it. Presumably buyers go in for this sort of hyperbole but it leaves me cold. Just me?

"Like the star at six o'clock that sends a ripple of light across the dial, its brilliance finds its muse in Kaia Gerber (me neither) who embodies the watch in luminous Moonshine Gold. Two stars in play in a balance of light and shadow, precision and beauty" :grumble:

Most watch related markets is BS. I don’t see this as any different, or more egregious than the norm…

Honestly @RichM , this sort of thing puts me off. However, I find that later on I may, if out looking at watches may remember the advert and will often check out that particular watch to see what the fuss is about and whether it lives up to the advertising hype, just out of curiosity.
I guess that means the advertising is doing its job! Damn it. 😂

@RichM

I was not going to buy it (for my wife) when Cindy was shilling/selling for them so why would I buy it know that Kaia is?

It's a watch, with a celeb endorsement, the blurb is somewhat schmaltzy; what's new? :-k :-k

Personally I wouldn't buy it because I don't like the design. The words just fly over my head, too much else to think or worry about rather than being wound up by some silly words on an ad.

Is it the wording that make you cringe or the ad overall? Just don't bother reading anything similar in future ?

Not sure what exactly offends me particularly. I think it's the ott use of language that does nothing for me and the ad is clearly not designed with me as a target audience. I now know the Kaia Gerber is the daughter of Cindy Crawford so I have at least learnt something!

The copy for that add seems fairly innocuous for a piece marketing a jewellery watch. Interesting that Omega have kept it in the family, with Cindy handing over to the young lady who is her daughter.

I imagine that we all think we are immune to marketing, but is that really the case? :)

It’s amusing to me that I initially thought the person in the first ad looked much like Cindy Crawford and later in the thread learned her identity. :D

The ad copy here is nothing I would typically read if I encountered the ad in print somewhere. If the product catches my attention, I may read further. If the product doesn’t look interesting, the remainder of the ad is lost on me.

The wording, cloyingly sickly, makes me feel like sending a wave of stomach contents across the table😂

I never read watch sales blurb. Especially the tripe that CW comes up with.

I was expecting a note about watch manufacturers and unrelated pop culture. Like football.

^^^ In many ways the football reference is on point…
:)

I recall at least one member on here who liked certain Tudor watches, until…

Beckham became a brand ambassador. At which point they declared they would never buy a Tudor watch!

Seemed kind of crazy behaviour to me…

You liked the watch. The watch is the same. You now don’t like the watch!

Is this old Audi ad the reason I now drive one?! It's about as opposite to the Omega ad as you can get (I've read the thread about embedding youtube videos so I hope this works!)
