I love the astronaut! The hands less so - remind me a bit of paper clips.
For me the Apiar watches aren’t really about them as watches, but it was about their technology and manufacturing process. They had a real time video showing the cases being 3D printed and plenty of cases on show in various stages of finish, from the raw printed case up to the finished watch.

Their actual designs are a little bit out there for me to actually want to own one just yet, but I really like what they are doing. It’s something completely different and the engineer in me finds their manufacturing process really fascinating.

They explained that dial on the watch is concave and the tether that holds the astronaut in place is showing him being pulled down into some sort of vortex with him being sucked out the other side. He also appears on the rotor having been passed through. I’m not sure of the thought process that went into that idea.

@iain

Thanks to you and others for sharing all the pictures – you look to have had an interesting time.

Your post above poses a couple of questions that I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on, along with those of others who went.

Clearly there are watches there from companies who are making innovations in terms of materials technology, such as Apiar, and horological innovations such as CW have been doing with the Bel Canto.

However, what proportion of what you saw strikes you as being purely design driven? Doing what people have always done, especially using proprietary movements, and redesigning the visual elements or rethinking them to appeal to a particular audience? I liked the Farer Worldtimer, but does it break new ground? Similarly the Pinchbeck with the Union Flag on the dial? I used to like Pinchbeck but in horological terns I think they’ve stood still.

@Amor Vincit Omnia Pinchbeck I think had only 6 watches on their stand and every one was very classically styled and not something I’m that interested by, I didn’t dwell long on their stand.

As to your question, almost all the brands I spoke to are more product design led rather than engineering led.

Elliot brown showed off their shock proof system that is usually hidden in the case, but outside of EB and those you have already mentioned, almost all others who were present are just putting Sellita, Miyota or Seiko movements into their own design of watch, which in many cases is made for them in a factory somewhere east of Istanbul.

I agree Iain. Apiar stood out for me too. The owner mentioned a price of £1,400 come January.

Their watches are as light as a feather.

Thanks, Iain, that was pretty much as I anticipated.

@Amor Vincit Omnia - Steve,

Following on from my earlier post, and to build on @iain - Iain's comments, I had quite a good look at, and chat with, Pinchbeck.

Agreed, most of their watches are Classical in design, none more so than the Lindum Gold, albeit the dial is brass.

Image

. . .but then they are a niche market manufacturer and not chasing volume. Arguably more exclusive than Brellum where Sebastian limits his production to 299 pieces per annum, Pinchbeck make 'around 100 watches' per annum.

What caught my eye is their The Albion which is much more of a daily wear 'Sports' watch (only 30M WR though) due out Spring 2025.

Food for thought.

@Bahnstormer_vRS
Thanks, Guy.

They were a brand I remember being interested in early on. But I always thought the price a bit steep.

I’m not sure I could wear a watch with the flag of any nation on the dial. :-k

^^^ A rather challenging design that doesn’t really work, due to the way the indices interact with the points of the flag.

I think if a designer is going to stick a flag on the dial it would be much better if the flag had twelve focal points that would represent the indices, set against a contrasting colour of dial.

Makes sense really, isn't"pinchbeck" the name of a cheap substitute for gold?

An interesting observation, Neil, and I take your point.

However, I feel the flag works as it is with, for example, the diagonals aligning with the 'II' and 'IIII'.

I'm sure that others will have seen this too, but it looks like the Manchester event will be repeated 8th November 2025.
