Last Flight Of The Vulcan Bomber
Superb documentary on Channel 4 with Guy Martin detailing XH558's final flight as well as the history of this amazing feat of aviation history. Not to be missed if you're a fan.

Amazing, aren't they? If you've not been, the Jet Age museum at Staverton nr Gloucester (near the airport) is worth a visit. Has a Vulcan cockpit there you can board.kiter65 wrote:Brilliant ...Guy at his best....and I have sat in one thanks to Paul

Missed setting 'R' on the skybox as too engrossed in Strictly & Antiques Roadshow.
Wife has made a note to download tomorrow from CH4 catchup; will then catchup in the week (minus the adverts).

Re: Last Flight Of The Vulcan Bomber
It's expected that both Vulcans will continue to do fast taxi runs. Amazing will-power from the pilot to keep her on the ground right at the point of take off! This actually happened, for a few feet, with a Victor at Bruntingthorpe a few years ago .. it's on YouTube
Hadn't realised there was an emergency with nose wheel lowering a short while back .. scary stuff, yet, as always, the crew seemed pretty much unphased and cool. Interesting to hear about the rear crews' emergency escape procedure too!

This one 'ere. Actually it might well have been the time that GM was there, as this was the June 'Fast Taxi' day and when I took the pics of 558 overhead,Helix Von Smelix wrote:The "Fast taxi" that he did was on the aircraft we crawled all over at the GTG

Great programme, we were privileged to experience a low level pass straight down our archery shooting range this summer on its way to Elvington near York. Incredible noise and grace, sad to see her grounded. The Vulcan 607 book is well worth a read to fully explain the amazing feat of getting a Vulcan to the Falklands.

Re: Last Flight Of The Vulcan Bomber
Really enjoyed it. Guy Martin seems to have a knack on these programmes... genuine and almost (probable) childlike enthusiasm coupled with his obvious technical nouse. Made the 90 minutes fly... literally.
And I'll second this :
And I'll second this :
Authored by Rowland White. Whilst the programme covered the basics, the book brings a much edgier sense to how far the boundaries were stretched to get to the Falklands and, more importantly, back again.Tyke wrote: The Vulcan 607 book is well worth a read to fully explain the amazing feat of getting a Vulcan to the Falklands.

Thanks so much for the heads up on this, which I watched last night on catchup.MadJam250 wrote:Superb documentary on Channel 4 with Guy Martin detailing XH558's final flight as well as the history of this amazing feat of aviation history. Not to be missed if you're a fan.
This program brought back so many memories of my early teens when I was in the junior RAF, the Air Training Corps. I was lucky enough to sit inside one of these things during one of our annual visits to an RAF base while they were still operational.
I sat through the whole program with the weird combination of a big grin on my face and an ever so slight moisture in the eye department. Great story, well told. And what a wonderful aircraft.
