Took a ‘Sunday Drive’ today along the A4 Bath Road, stopping off at The Waggon & Horses, Beckhampton west of Marlborough, Wiltshire. The pub dates back to the sixteenth century. Charles Dickens mentions the building in his novel 'The Pickwick Papers'. The shingle walls of this ancient waggoners' inn are built from smashed stones from the nearby Avebury Ring, Europe's biggest Neolithic stone circle. The weather wasn’t exactly kind to take a photograph of the pub but it’s been a regular watering hole for me since the mid 70s. The photograph below was taken this summer from the beer garden towards Silbury Hill.
Silbury Hill is a man-made chalk and clay mound, It dates from the Neolithic period of prehistory some 4,700 years ago. This famous conical-shaped hill is 130 feet high or 40 metres. Historians and archaeologists have long mused over what the hill was used but no one has been able to come up with a definitive answer. Some have suggested it was used for astronomical purposes or perhaps as an ancient sundial or something else. The Romans are also likely to have used the hill as a look-out post when they were marching along their road, now the A4. I guess they also stopped off for a pint.

This is the world’s first flower clock in Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, dates to 1802.

Looks very much like Sidmouth to me! One of our favourite places. I'll be there next month.StrapMeister wrote:Outlook from the Hotel terrace

Well we've dodged the rain so far in the Lake District, but it's coming down today. View from Windermere, view from Ambleside, and yesterday a lovely walk in the sun around Tarn Hows.

Might not be the most exciting photograph I’ve ever taken but the bread I made this morning sure tasted lovely.
