Junior WIS training!
It's always nice to read about Chris Johnson's daughter Ollie and Alasdair's godson and their interest in watches. Well, our Year 3 children (7-8) have been making sundials in Science and will be studying the solar system, so their head of year asked me to give a presentation on time.
I don't teach these younger children so it was lovely to spend a while with them - they have an incredible mix of respect and curiosity at that age!
I prepared a PowerPoint tracing the history of timekeeping - sundials - tracking the stars - candles, hourglasses & water bowls - early mechanical "bell" clocks - early dials and watches - Huygens - Harrison....right through to modern pieces. I had half a dozen wristwatches and two pocket watches with me and showed them a bit about how they worked...they were fascinated by the pocket watches when opened and the glass back on the Nomos.
NB. I showed them photographs of the watches as opposed to letting them handle them! But loud watches were held to little ears to the delight of all.
They were enthralled and asked some fantastic questions. Half a dozen little girls even appeared at my door at lunchtime to ask if they could see the watches again!
What a delightful hour...I felt that I was really striking sparks with these children.
Mind you, they've probably got home, switched their iPads on and forgotten all about it. But if there's just one who was really grabbed then it was worth it.

I so enjoyed reading about your day in school, definitely a fine example of, those who can, teach.

Re: Junior WIS training!
My son is into watches a bit, mostly due to watching me acquiring and selling watches all the time. He's got a Seiko 5 Aviator and a couple of fashion watches. However, he's getting my C3 Cream Mk1 for his 11th birthday next week as a surprise present. Hope he likes it!

Thanks for sharing that AVO - I am glad it was as rewarding for you as it clearly was for them

Re: Junior WIS training!
they come to it with a real freshness - not bothered really at that age by brand / others' opinions - and it is lovely - you will be surprised AVO how much they will have absorbed from that and which they will come out with over the years / months - it wouldn't surprise me at all if it is referred to when they are first offered a watch of their own by parents etc...
well done!

Seriously..Steve, you have done a wonderful thing by introducing children to horology. You may not get any that take long term interest, but hopefully at least one. If nothing else you have introduced them all to something that might someday be a passion. If you only generated a spark, it was a huge success.

I believe to George Bernard Shaw wrote the above to disparage teachers but it was the Teacher Training Agency that coined the saying 'those who can, teach' to promote the profession.Kip wrote:

popularly extended when I was doing my teacher training as:Berkshire wrote:I believe to George Bernard Shaw wrote the above to disparage teachers but it was the Teacher Training Agency that coined the saying 'those who can, teach' to promote the profession.Kip wrote:

Those who can - do
Those who can't - teach
Those who can't teach - teach teachers
Those who can't teach teachers - do educational research
Those who can't do educational research - become school inspectors
Those who can't become school inspectors - become minister for education

I'm sure in many years to come, one or more of these children will recount their first experience of horology!
Well done.

Re: Junior WIS training!
Well done AVO! There is hope for our younger generation and watches.
As I said in a previous thread, my 8 year old daughter asked for a Flik Flak watch for Christmas and has pretty much been wearing it everyday since.

Re: Junior WIS training!
I have one of these! (sorry..unable to post a photo at this time)
Mine is in a cardboard box, but the watch is the same.
A very small but fascinating piece of history.
