Always has been:

SPECTRE Logo Evolution

The first is on Blofeld's ring and and the paper coaster with the message on it that Kronsteen reads through the glass of water during the Chess tournament in From Russia With Love; and the second on Blofeld's ring in You Only Live Twice.

The only thing they "messed up" with the latest version is that it has seven legs, but no doubt that was intentional, possibly to make it look less like an octopus and more like the silhouette of a spectre (?) whilst maintaining enough of a resemblence to the previous two to be obvious what it is...

That's right Scrogg. Originally it was a spectre (skull like head with 4 trailing 'legs') amd as the series went on it erroneously chznged to an octopus. Sttange too how SPECTRE didn't elaborate as to what the acronym stood for either.

Just because it used to be an acronym doesn't necessarily mean it still is...

Quantum didn't mean anything in that way, so it would follow that the 'new' Spectre (as opposed to SPECTRE) doesn't either.

In the books Bond went up aganst SMERSH (acronym of SMERt' SHpionam or 'Death to Spies') but that was substituted for SPECTRE in the films, with SMERSH only being referred to briefly in From Russia With Love and used as a smokescreen in The Living Daylights, so perhaps it was decided to make Spectre a name this time around? Like the adapted octopus/spectre logo, close enough to the orignal so that everyone knows what it is, but different enough to make it new...

Could be, in as much as James Bond could in fact be a woman.

Quantum was never used in any previous books or films, whereas SPECTRE has been, so it would make no sense that the SPECTRE organisation isn't the same as that used in numerous books and films prior. Saying that, this film barely touched on the organisation's MO before it got blown up (HQ wise, at least). No doubt ESB will be put on the rack for next time:

"Do you expect me to talk?"

"No Mr Blofeld, we expect you to die .. but before then tell us a bit more about your evil plans and why you really became so deranged just because you were jealous of your adoptive brother 40 or so years back?"

It clearly is the same organisation. I didn't say it wasn't.

I suggested that perhaps this time around they decided to just make it a name (as they did with Quantum) rather than an acronym.

In today's world organisations like al Qaeda, Boko Haram, Hamas, Hezbollah and the Talban are well known, so using Spectre as a name would not seem strange to most. In the simpler times of the 1960s, when nations not groups were the threat, things needed to be explained to audiences, so dialogue such as this needed to be added to scripts:

Dr. No: I'm a member of SPECTRE
Bond: SPECTRE?
Dr. No: SPECTRE. Special Executive for Counter-Intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, Extortion. The four great cornerstones of power headed by the greatest brains in the world.
Bond: Correction. Criminal brains!
Dr. No: The successful criminal brain is always superior. It has to be!

But anyway, I'm going to see it again this afternoon, so I'll let you know if we both missed something, and if it is indeed an acronym ;-)

Nice one Scrogg. Keep us posted.

By the way, let me/us know where the train passengers went during the fight scene ;-)

Nope, you didn't miss anything, it wasn't said.

I didn't even notice that first time around!

There weren't many before the fight scene, but they do seem to just disappear... :-k

(It's definitely an octopus though! I went for a pee during the titles so didn't see them last time, but there can be no doubt now I have!)

And after that same scene he didn't seem to have a scratch. In his previous films, DC has always looked a bit scuffed up after similar fight scenes. Ok, it's not meant to be wholly realistic and Bond films are supposed to be far fetched etc, but to me this was almost a comic book, super hero film, unlike the 3 before. Great entertainment though and glad you enjoyed it again ..I applaud your having a pee through Sam Smith's (awful) song  .. who needs a torture scene when you have Smith's falsetto abusing your ear drums?! ;-)

I remember that dialogue from Dr No and just assumed that the use of the name in the latest film was a reference to the same organisation.

Indeed. Was hoping this would have been done in the new movie to at least inform newer generations.
