Interesting Discussion re JLC Pricing

Post by JAFO »

I find "This watch, that watch" content quite stimulating. Interesting one here about JLC pricing strategy. :D

I too found this one interesting. I don't always agree with his conclusions but I always find his discussions well thought out.

I happen to agree with his conclusion here. The price increase is a move by JLC to maintain positioning. I think the powers at the top woke up one day and said 'Should a Reverso really cost 50% of a Submariner?' We can't have that. I also agree that it might backfire in the short term because they jumped too far all at once.

On board with this. There's plenty of folk who are watch enthusiasts for whom JLC is aspirational, almost as much for their place in the pantheon as for the actual watches. The Watchmaker's Watchmaker and all that. Watches that are saved for, something special, not just bought as a nice luxury trinket out of spare change.
The latter group don't care, but that's (apparently) who JLC cares about more...

I'm in the former group. They turned their back on folks like me and I've turned my back on them. Secondary market down the track as discussed here?
No. They knocked the aspiration right out of it. Makes me a bit sad. It's OK, I'll get over it, buy a nice CW and really enjoy it :)

I have been quite interested in JLC watches, both reversos and their "normal" round watches. I think Andy on "The English Watch" mentioned increases in the past.

I think these swingeing increases will dampen my enthusiasm though. I clearly missed the boat on this one.
