I would buy a Rolex, and swap it for another Rolex every 3 months. Bought carefully, shouldn't lose money, and I can go through all the Rollies in a couple of years, after which I can buy whatever I like.

Whenever I wear them, I know that they were made for people like me that go for simple and timeless designs. So whenever I choose the watch for the day, it is very likely that it will be one of the watches by the German brand from Glashütte. Ironically, it is the same brand that might not work for you in the long run. Am I right? If that's the case: I still haven't got a Tangente - winking smiley -. Before you put it up for sale: listen to Bach and wear it!
Worry not, the Nomos is safe. Since hurting my left wrist last weekend I have been wearing a sports support bandage and my watch has therefore been on my right wrist. I have discovered that my right wrist is slightly larger than the left, so watches set on deployants are very tight. Other watches feel strange on the wrong side as well. By far the most comfortable is my Nomos so I have been wearing it all week. And over the last 24 hours it is +/-0. Some watch! How could I have thought it in danger!

The Cartier and the Nomos will both be in the core collection.

If I could start from scratch I would ask the missus to buy me a vostok Amphibia for christmas, id modify it once or twice and that would be the end of it all.

A fortune is saved and iv lost out on nothing.

(to add - I would also have my grandads dress seiko for fancier occasions as it was left to me in his will, so two decent watches)

I want to consolidate and have been doing so for a year at least - now I'm at 17 and having trouble thinking it can go below 12.
I miss all the great things that may never be.

If you could start again from scratch...?

Too interesting a question to hide in OT!

I would buy 3 of my current 11 for sure:

Nomos Club 36
Sinn 656 A
Tudor Oysterdate 74000 - this kind:

Then I would figure out what I wanted in an ideal beater and get that (might also come from my current 11 but might not - maybe a midsize Alba solar diver).

So why don't I sell my other 8? I've thought if it but I don't need to and within that 8 are birth year watches, designs I love, sub £50 beaters and watches I have enjoyed sourcing and wearing. If I needed the relatively small amount of cash I could sell them but I've consolidated to the point I would probably miss all of them.

Interestingly my 3 keepers are my most expensive watches by a significant margin. This is probably inevitable as any time my most expensive watch has *not* been my favourite/got a lot of wrist-time I have flipped it pretty quickly.

What would I do?

Not buy any of the sport / diver watches except the C60 and instead buy fewer but decent dress watches, as I type this I'm now thinking if I should sell the Vostok and Bulova to fund a Certina.
Seiko 1989 Sports 150 Gold / Sports Chrono Ti
CW C70 Ad Astra / C60 Trident pro Orange bezel / FLE 2015
Tissot T-Touch classic / PRS 516 Auto Blue Face
Bulova Marine Star Red face
Ball Fireman Victory Blue face
Mondaine Stop2Go backlight

^^Good thinking. You only need one beater.

As others have said, it's all about the journey. My collection is large (30+) and to be honest, fairly messy, but it reflects the passion and curiosity I had at the time I bought each watch. I am definitely slowing down and now have the pleasure of re-discovering watches in my collection that haven't had wrist time in a while. I still don't own a CWL (yet) so my journey is continuing. It ain't over!

Reason being that the watches I have were bought at a particular time and for a particular reason, and I love them for that. The emotion behind the watch is as important as the watch itself for me.
If they were nicked and I had the insurance money:

Dress: Tresor or Calatrava
Day: Current Zenith 410
Extra: Explorer 1 or GS.

So true...instead of buying affordable $500 watches, I should have bought one 3 or 4 thousand dollar watch with pedigree

I would make sure that I didn't buy a watch before actually having held it in my hands. Twice I bought watches that I've only seen online before. Once I owned them I wasn't as thrilled as before. That's what makes my decision on getting a CW watch so difficult, as much as I adore the pics of the C60, I'm afraid to fall into the same trap again.

That's probably a better idea, just buy one and when you get sick of it, sell for something new rather than 'collect'. Too bad Cw doesn't have an exchange program...

Hello,
New to the forum, stumbled on this thread. I've only just begun collecting. I know people who have ONE watch, they spent a bit on it and its their watch. Sits next to their car keys and wallet. I can no longer relate to these people. Not saying its wrong, I just can't imagine only having one to choose from. That said, of my modest collection none of them exceed $500. Can't imagine spending much more than that either. Though I'm plowing down the rabbit hole with no sign of stopping so who knows.

Christopher Ward, 1st gen GMT, pepsi bezel. Should have held out for the black bezel. Will probably sell/swap for one at some point. My CW C7 rapide m2 was my gateway watch. Then came a used Trident 300. God willing, as long as I'm collecting, I'll have a trident at the seat of honor.

Thanks for a great post!
Cheers,
D
