Nice to look at, so many designs from numerous brands all without taking up too much space.
Oh yes- pens too, despite rarely using them I have a few nice pens, including one that was hand made by a senior guy at Samsung, who gifted it to my missus, before I “acquired” it from her 😄

Fountain pens for me also! (which would invariable lead to buying large quantities of different colour inks to go with them) - costs would soon mount up.

Definitely vinyl. I started collecting back in the late 80s, paused during the period when it wasn’t really produced for new albums and have since started up again several years ago.

You know it’s getting serious when you commission a local cabinet maker to make a bespoke set of shelves for them as most “off the shelf” bookcases don’t tend to accommodate records very well.

Well, cough cough, cameras, film cameras and the ability to shoot without ever counting the cost of film and development.

But then I'm mostly talking about old technology and I've pretty well got all the medium format cameras and lenses that I need in TLR and SLR formats plus one or two folders.

35mm-wise I'm content with my vintage rangefinders but I skimp on lenses and would be very pleased to go a bit further upmarket with glass. And who wouldn't want to try a Leica body?

35mm SLR: well there's not much more I want with Olympus stamped on it.

Digitally? I'm content with my full frame 5DII and glass. Upgrade to 5DIV? Well I'm not sure how much I'd use the extra features tbh. Likewise Mirrorless: hmm, maybe we're getting somewhere now with a fantasy upgrade. Yes. It would be Canon because I'm brand-loyal and I can't be naffed with chasing the current "best kit" from brand to brand.

Cars? Yes, I could look at flipping all the watches to add an air-cooled 911 for high days and holidays and had actually been thinking in that direction but with the current state of private motoring in the UK and guessing where we might be in ten years' time.... come to think of it, what state will I be in ten years' hence? Seventy eight years old and something's bound to be creaking. :silent: :silent:

I might have a small obsession with tools. That’s roughly 2/3 of my tools in the photo, stacked in the shelves etc, the rest are elsewhere :silent:

Money no object.. cars oh and maybe more cars. Old, modern, in between, racers, sports, saloons, coupes, tourers, GTs. Oh and of course the hangar style garage to home them and time to enjoy them.
Clothes also a thing for me, coats particularly and nice shoes.
There have been others over the years.
However with all, a significant part of the pleasure would be the hunt and acquisition process.

Funny you mention this, as I almost led my post with cameras. I definitely went through a camera phase and have amassed a modest little collection. But I think that phase is over. I’ve committed to the micro 4/3 format and love it. I’ve got an Olympus body I love and a small collection of primes that more than meet my needs. I’ll only upgrade the body when it breaks or I’m compelled to because of outdated technology. Occasionally I fantasize about a fixed aperture zoom, but it remains fantasy. Ironically, my iPhone handles most of my photographic duty now because it’s always with me.
Marvellous how many pics the phone handles happily day to day, but then it’s generally on the outer when a “photographically inclined event” happens.
My previous setup was m43 with a mix of primes and zooms and I loved it to bits, but after buying a Sony RX10iii (bridge camera) I was truly amazed at how good its notably smaller sensor was in comparison to the M43, particularly in lower light and I was quite stunned by just how good the 24-600 (equivalent) f2.4-4 lens was at virtually every real life use (though focus could be slow -sometimes- at long lengths). That lead to a toe as in the water with the A7R2 Sony and was absolutely stunned by how the ISO setting became largely worry free. I also discovered just how quickly autofocus cameras can work. Heavy bugger though, particularly the lenses.
Yet the iPhone still takes photos on a much more regular basis…. :) The camera you have with you is the best camera you have.

Truer words were never spoken. The danger for me was buying cameras or lenses that far exceeded my ability to make proper use of them. I have always longed for fixed aperture fast zooms, but I simply couldn't justify the expense, given my abilities. It would have been a vanity purchase, you know? My current set-up is really quite perfect for me and ability level. Added bonus, the Olympus OM-D EM-5 has a cool retro look. At a quick glance, it looks like a film body. And the primes are small and fast; they border on pocketable!

All a waste though, if I don't have the camera on me! Thank god for the capabilities of the iPhone camera!

I would probably collect modern design classics. Furniture, lamps, objects. Also modern art. And books, new and old. Poetry, classic travel books and gorgeous coffe table books.

I like your ideas, Bjørn.

An interesting thread that I’d like to develop with a couple of general points.

Over the years I’ve tended to notice a lot of interest in cars, cameras, guitars, hi-fi equipment to name a few. Interesting shirts and footwear. Occasionally consumables such as wine, whisky and cigars. For those of us with several interests and/or obsessions, where do watches fit in? Are they at the top of the tree, languishing in the lower branches, or somewhere in the middle?

My other point is not really a question. I’ve always enjoyed taking photographs, and appreciate a nice camera. I like listening to music on a decent system. I suppose I even like driving or being driven in a nice car. But as soon as anyone starts to get deep and technical about any of these things, I seem to switch off. I suppose I’m not sufficiently far into any of them to be anything other than an interested end user.

I think I’m driven much more by ideas and words than by technological or practical matters.

This would be me too. I seem to have a fascination with well designed lamps and furniture. It probably developed as a teenager wondering around Terence Conran's Habitat store in my home city. Coffee table books are good too, although I'm not so big on poetry.

Vintage razors and paraphernalia. Straight and safety. I have a small collection, that, like my watches, were all bought to be used, not just displayed. I have not bought any in a number of years now, as price skyrocketed about 10 years ago when wet-shaving became popular again. With the exception of a couple that were bought with the intention of restoring, and have sat in a box since, they all get used, to varying degrees. None of my razors are particularly valuable, but rather were all purchased simply because I like them. Sadly my favourite razor, appearance wise, gives one of my least favourite shaves. It gets an occasional outing, but spends most of it's time on display.

If money and space were no object, it would be cars, and some Northern and West Coast Indigenous art.

Poetry might be an acquired taste, Des, but I firmly believe it is for everyone. It just needs to be given a chance. :)
