How much? I coulda bought a watch for that.

Post by strapline »

This idea for a thread is a curmudgeon's corner-type thread. It's about having a beef or gripe about having to spend a large sum of money on something unforeseen that doesn't seem that appealing. The spend is significant enough that it would have bought you a cracker of a watch; the thought of which is mortifying. The rules are simple, mention what it is that syphoned off your watch fund. You can mention price if you wish, or be a little more abstract. Like the curmudgeon's corner, avoid commenting on other's posts. Perhaps you can even mention the watch you would have bought if your loot hadn't been so heinously misappropriated. Below is my post to start the thread.

A root canal, a blxxdy root canal. Three treatments culminating in a crown to cover up all that drilling; seriously, I thought the endodontist would emerge in the southern hemisphere he went so deep. And now I'm the best part of 2k light.

PS. I went back five pages in the offtopic posts and couldn't find a similar thread. Has this been done before?

When I retired, I had health insurance through the school system until Sept. 30. I was told I’d receive a letter over the summer indicating a change in status so my wife could add me to her health insurance. That letter arrived OCTOBER 4, four days after my insurance expired. Because of the timing, my coverage through my wife wouldn’t begin until Nov. 1, thus requiring me to pay a not insubstantial sum out of pocket for bridge coverage for one month. Gotta love the US healthcare system.

I’m currently paying £7k ish per year for university accommodation for my daughter. She was in university accommodation last year but has this year moved into student only flats but owned by a private company. It’s not any cheaper though.

However she’ll be choosing my care home one day so I see it as a wise investment to house her somewhere half decent.

BONUS POST:

A few years ago we got substantial rain that lead to the collapse of a cinder block retaining wall that was shoring up an addition on my wife’s home (original home built in 1914; addition added in the 80s or 90s). It was painfully obvious after the collapse that this was a half-ass job by the previous owner, not even remotely up to the task of supporting the added weight of the addition.

This wall collapse was not in any way covered by insurance. Without the wall, my wife’s house would certainly begin to shift and would wind up almost certainly sliding into the neighboring house. But alas, this was not covered.

My wife had to pay $40k out of pocket for an engineering study and a new wall. The wall was a monster that begged the question, how on earth had the house not collapsed with the other flimsy wall.

She paid that wall off in a year and a half!

1914? In America?

Wouldn’t that class it as a historic monument?

I just paid about £600 for road tax for the next year (for the right to sit in traffic jams for endless roadworks, or bust my suspension on the plethora of potholes in our street). That's enough for a nice pre-owned Trident.

Not sure I have got the hang of this…

A few years ago Mrs nbg and I decided that we only needed one car. Sold hers and the following week I bought a Moser.

Mine is on the horizon as apposed to already happened. My family and I'll reluctantly admit, myself have noticed that over the last couple of years my hearing has deteriorated. I hear fine face on or one to one in quiet environments. The problem is that I can't hear when there is background noise or multiple conversations or noises. I have to confess that the TV, music player and computer have definitely risen in volume to compensate.
I refuse to wear clunky hearing aids, so like an acquaintance of similar age and circumstance I'll look to purchase a bespoke and discreet set. They seem to be priced around 5k. It's probably time that I get it sorted to stop any further deterioration. 😂. On the other hand there is a Cartier, an omega and a GS that looks very tempting. 😂

I've just edited the post to include some underlined text that is key for this thread. 'Unforeseen' is the bread and butter of it all. Fixed, known expenses are annoying but, in many ways, are anticipated and mitigated. It's that out of the blue stuff that really hurts the watch fund.
