Home Server

Post by The_beano »

Hi this is only my 2nd or maybe 3rd post but I have noticed there is a few tech heads in the forum. And thought I would ask a technical question. I want a home server I am not really bothered what size but has to be over 5TB. I know this is a bit cheeky as engineers can charge up to £120 an hour “so I have been quoted”. But really just want a plug and play home server I can’t build 1 I am not that technical but I can work out a few things, I.E follow destruction manuals. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks Mark

When you say server do you mean a server for running stuff on or a storage server to keep stuff on?

You can buy a pre-configured setup from HP, Dell or any of the major players, and it's pretty much plug-n-play.

I can't help here. :(

I have a home server that handles 3 computers and a backup system that is backing up twice a day. I don't know anything more than that because I have a guy that comes in every 2 weeks to check.

It is all because of my wifes business.

Yeah, because there's no risk of potentially serious problems over a mis-spelling of a drug or piece of software...

Anyway, to the OP: what sort of thing do you want your server to do? I have a 5 terabyte one made from bits of old computers (plus a few hard drives) which runs on RAID and has an off-site backup for crucial stuff of under 2GB but without some details of your desires and capabilities it's hard to say what's needed. Perhaps some expertise is worth the money?

I'm using the QNAP TS-859 Pro+ and I can also highly recommend QNAP!
