Football question (Any Refs on here) ?

Post by magicman »

Hello there

I'm confused.
I thought a penalty kick had to be from the spot 12 yards away.
But yesterday, someone taking one, rolled the ball, off the spot, towards the goal, until the back edge of the ball was level with the front edge of the spot.
Much as they do with corner kicks.
This seems to not adhere to the 12 yard rule.
I'd be interested to hear from anyone who knows the rule.

I've no idea on this, Steve, so looked it up.

From . . law 14

"The ball must be stationary on the penalty mark and the goalposts, crossbar and goal net must not be moving."

Presumably if any part of the ball is 'over', rather than 'on', the penalty marker (spot), it's legitimate; whether that's forwards, backwards or sideways of the marker.
