I'm trying to think of anything where the "starter set" is good and struggling
A 'starter set' should contain what you need to get started in any activity and does not imply lack of quality. However that can usually be deduced by the price - while you don't always get what you pay for, you never get what you don't pay for!. Power tools that use a common battery - a starter set should include the tool, battery and charger. the next purchase in the range doesn't need the charger and possibly not the battery.

While off-topic, there seem to be certain sports/hobbies where rampant consumerism has convinced participants that buying more expensive kit will make them better. I know cyclists who have spent over £4k on their bikes, and I'm sure that brings them pleasure, but lets be honest, Jason/Laura Kenny could beat them in a race on a bike from Halfords.

Personally I don't think that anyone buying an expensive watch - and the majority are not bought by people on watch fora - needs to understand much as long as they get pleasure from it. At the worst they are supporting the industry and helping make your watch more affordable. I know people with expensive cars who have no clue about how they work, how to fix them if they go wrong etc. Most of them can't or will not even change a wheel if they get a puncture. That doesn't seem very good to me, but it's personal choice, just not my choice.
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left

The C63 isn't my entry into Swiss watches, but I think it is about to become my entry into Christopher Ward. That's entry level enough for me.

^^^ it will be interesting to see which one you go for. I have the GMT in Black and can thoroughly recommend it.

Right now, it's between the GMT white & non-GMT white. But now that you mention it, that black GMT is a beauty too!
