Dry January 2024

Post by TheBeatles »

I’m going to do Dry January next month.

I haven’t done it for a few years.

Anybody else partaking, or maybe abstaining is the correct term?

No JD will be tough!

I did that in January 2023 and it wasn't a problem, but then I don't drink JD :D

I might do it again in January as it'll fit into my gym work well.

JD is my main tipple. Although I like a good Malt Whisky too, particularly a Dalmore.

I will be supporting a number of local breweries in January.

Personally I find JD overrated. If going American, then Jim Beam, Makers Mark or Wild Turkey would be my preference.

But - good luck with your endeavour.

I’ll usually pass on all the above! 😂 Of the lot, I’ll settle on Maker’s Mark.

And not a chance of a dry January for me.

I’m all for having some time away from the booze for health and wellbeing reasons, but not at the most miserable time of year.

My monthly beer subscription has given me the option of requesting an alcohol free box for January. That’s not an email I’ll be sending……

Most of my months are dry, not by willful choice, but because I’ve largely lost interest in imbibing. The beer I like most is a seasonal winter brew, so now is the time to “stock up” on it. Only I find I stocked up previously and still have 2 six-packs left from last year. :) The brewer has also changed something for this year as the alcohol content has risen to 10% abv up from 7.9% of prior years. Hmm, does that make my old beer collectible? :D Also, my wife doesn’t drink for health reasons and my kids aren’t old enough to drink. Not much of a solo drinker am I.

There are so many very good no/lo beers now that it's reasonably easy if you like a beer and I'm finding it easier to drink less because of the good no/lo alternatives.

I'm not sure if there are good examples for spirits.

I've had periods where I have drunk far too much in general and needed to make some cuts as it was beginning to have consequences in my personal and professional life. So yes, a dry January for me too.

No dry January for me. It is not something I have ever done.

I tend to have 4-5 alcohol free days a week, other than the 10-12 weeks a year we are away.

I will probably do an alcohol free January, other than Saturdays and a couple of restaurant lunches.

December for me involves far less events and alcohol than when I worked. Even less reason to even think of bothering with dry January.

don't really drunk much anymore, so it wouldn't be a big deal for me. 95% of when i drink is when i sing with the band(s). a beer or two helps keep my throat from getting too ragged out. but rarely more than 1-2 a week, if that.

Like others here, I drink very little these days. A dry month would so adversely affect my twelve month aggregate I'd be in very serious danger of becoming teetotal. Sometimes I think my drinking efforts ape a lot of my school reports: 'must try harder.'

I tend not to drink Monday to Thursday and then have a few drinks at the weekend. I would probably miss having a few beers or glasses of wine at the weekend after a hard week working…so no dry January for me.

Life is about moderation, not abstinence!

My Father had a moto or 'life lesson'; all things are good in moderation.

Why do a Dry January? Is it to pay a penance for too much imbibing over Christmas and the New Year holiday?

As with others, I only tend to drink a couple of days a week usually Fri, Sat or Sun although tonight's an exception as I've got a glass of a fresh young Calvados with a mince pie.

As for Jack Daniels?

My preference for an American tipple is Woodford Reserve Bourbon, preferably the Double Oak (oh, so smooth) although I do have a bottle of McLXJD2023 Edition bought in the summer but, as yet, unopened.

Otherwise, my preference is beer, wine (mostly Red) and Scottish Malt Whisky from the West Coast or Western Isles.
