Diamond Ring Required

Post by magicman »

Good Morning

I will be celebrating my 25th wedding anniversary this year.
I will be buying my long suffering wife a diamond ring to mark the occasion (we never got engaged, I decided to make an honest woman of her almost immediately).
We visited Fraser Hart yesterday, so I now have the style and size she likes.
Do I buy in Fraser Hart ? (A ring she tried on, right size, on budget in the sale 33% off)
Do Fraser Hart offer good value on Jewellery. ?
Alternatively, I could visit Hatton Garden or is there somewhere else in London/south east that is reccomended ?

Kind Regards Steve

apparently the only gems available from hatton garden were recovered by police and can only now be considered Nearly New

i'm sure someone else will have a useful reply - best wishes for your engagement 25 years on

Steve, I keep getting told that if you are buying stuff like this, then it's best to visit The Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham where you can deal direct with the manufacturer.

Some listed here:

There's always time for one more.

Definitely use someone either in Hatton Garden or the similar Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. High street prices are ridiculously inflated for both the stones and the setting of your chosen metal.

As long as the stone comes with its GIA certificate or similar, buy as cheaply as you can haggle (and there is usually quite a bit of room).

Go for colour over clarity. You won't see small dark bits with the naked eye, but two diamond rings next to each other quickly shows one as more yellow than the other. It's something you can't unsee.

Thanks for the info and congratulations.
I will definitely try to get to Hatton Garden in the next few weeks, at the very least , I will leave with a greater understanding of what to buy.
I'm not sure if I will have time to get up to Birmingham, but when I'm armed with the knowledge, I will check it out online.
Oh ! I forgot to mention, although I've had 25 years to plan, I have until 16th February to get it sorted. When I have, I will post a Finger shot.

Hi, have a look at a company called Cool Diamonds based in London. They are diamond brokers so you can select the size and grade of diamonds and the mounting / material. I bought my wife (to be) her solitaire engagement ring by post (!) and for £5000 got a ring that would cost over £7k on the high street. For her wedding ring we went and saw them and had it made to fit round her engagement ring. Have subsequently used them for some diamond earrings and the service has always been excellent.

Hope this helps.

Most people get engaged first. Got to give you credit...if it didn't work out you would have saved the cost of the ring.

Smart man for trying.

Congrats on 25 years!

Please delete this post.....dangerous evidence.
I bought the diamond from a diamond merchant then went to a ring maker, both in Hockley (Jewellery quarter) and the final thing was £5K cheaper than an identical cut and similar colour (G) at M&W.

I have always used E Katz in Hatton Garden. No flashy shop or champagne upon arrival, just great diamonds at great prices.

I'll vouch for jewellery quarter in Birmingham. Especially neweys. Angie in there is a saint. Like a jewellery wera!

ve spent ££££s in there now without any form of bad experience. My parents got their wedding / engagement rings from
There and so did my brother and sisters.

You get so much more for your money and everything is custom made for you. You will get twice the stone you would in any high street shop. They have a Facebook page too!
One day I'll get found out.

I bought my wife an eternity ring from SWAG - family owned jewellers that operate in the South East - I think they have a branch at Lakeside/ Bluewater. Did a good deal and you get a 10 year warranty. Worth a look.

Just a quick Update, I ended up mostly ignoring all your good advice.
The wife and I had planned to visit Hatton Garden to ring hunt.
Unfortunately the weather was horrid, so we ended up at Lakeside (indoor) shopping centre.
The good lady found a ring in Beaverbrooks, she wanted it and no other, so after a short discussion, about trying Hatton Garden the following week, and her deciding she would rather not. My Job is done.
I'm happy She's happy.

Thanks All Steve
