Not really, Richard.

I'm merely providing what I feel is a considered and measured response to the points you raised.

That’s how I read it. No rules were broken or bent. We have always advised members that they are allowed to expand on issues raised in CC, but that they must start another thread to do so. That guideline was followed.

This kind of thing happens on many other threads. A thread will start to go off topic and someone will start a new thread to discuss a point based on where the conversation was going. I think the only difference here is the point that Richard makes around the curmudgeon thread being somewhere that someone may post thinking it won’t lead to a further discussion.

However I would think that in reality, if someone is of a mind to say something in a public forum, then they wouldn’t be adverse to people mentioning it so I don’t see the problem.

Steve, hopefully I’ve got this right. I can’t reply on Curmudgeon’s Corner but I can copy and paste a post from there to here or start a new thread with, say a title prefaced with - Curmudgeon’s Corner Response. That’s because a guideline says I can but which is not apparent on the rules set in Curmudgeon’s Corner. However, I can report anyone who has quoted me from Curmudgeon’s Corner here or on another thread to admin because another guideline says I can. It’s not a question, no need to reply, my limited intelligence has got it now and I couldn’t agree more - life is definitely too short.

I would say this.

The opening post of Curmudgeons Corner states:

It is just a place to make a statement of why... about the little curiosities of life... not to answer them.

So there you have it.

State your gripe or ask your question only..don’t answer anyones’s and you will not get an answer. Just a place to vent a bit.

I call it the Curmudgeons Corner.

I feel that Kip was misguided to introduce a thread entitled 'Curmudgeons Corner Response' as in my opinion reference to this flies against everything that CC stands for.

If Kip had started a thread entitled 'Are We Technology Slaves?' with no reference to Tally's post then that would have been fine. It was the direct reference to CC that gave me a jolted 'WTF' moment. I really wish that I had posted my thoughts at the time before Richard had rather than piggy back his. I should have been braver.

For those of you who have called it or liked the comment using the word arbitrary then I should point out that it is reinforced by being a specific Forum Rule:

Rule 13. Curmudgeons Corner thread (in off-topic section)

13.1 This thread is designed to be cathartic, rather than a conversation. Please read the opening post of the thread. Replies to previous posts will be deleted.

I have made many, many mistakes while I have been on Forum. This post is not aimed at Kip in a personal way. He knows very well what I think of him.

All seems very petty to me, it's just a thread on a watch forum.
Lock the thread and move on.

I think scooter has summarised it well.

The confusion/consternation has come about because Kip made his new thread explicitly a response to a Curmudgeon's Corner post by Tally, and even quoted Tally's post. Kip has conceded above that this may not have been the best approach.

I think it's fine for anyone to start a new thread that is sparked by something they have read in Curmudgeon's Corner - after all, we all get our ideas for threads and posts from things we have seen somewhere before (inside or outside of the forum) or thought about. This has been encouraged many times in the past. However, personally I think that quoting from the Curmudgeon's Corner is probably unhelpful - as is putting the thread title as "Curmudgeon's Corner response", again as Kip has suggested above. Like scooter, I'm not having a go at Kip at all, I'm just reflecting on this minor episode with a little hindsight.

I wouldn't want to see lots of contrived new threads/posts quoting from Curmudgeon's Corner and explicitly titled "Curmudgeon's Corner Response", which are attempted to be justified along the lines of "well, Kip did it".

As others have said, this is pretty minor in the big scheme of things. Let's not blow it out of proportion.

Although it was not my intent to start a discussion around a rules violation, but rather around technology and its effect. I fully accept the "Mea Culpa". My apologies.

Thank you for the considered comments.

I therefore have locked this topic and posted here should anyone wish to discuss.
