Cryptic Crossword Competition!

Post by Amor Vincit Omnia »

I’ve been making a cryptic crossword (answers being the names of watch brands - all single words).

The puzzle uses the standard devices found in crosswords like the Times, Telegraph &c. (Anagrams, hidden words, reversals) But as you know the type of answer you’re looking for it shouldn’t be too difficult.

The site I use does leave a few orphans (unchecked words) but it adds to the fun.

I will post a link to a printable pdf version in DROPBOX as near to 2100 UK time as possible tonight (Wednesday 15th). The winner will be the first to PM me a photo of the completely correct solution.

All members welcome to participate (including mods because they haven’t seen the puzzle...honest!j

The prize is this lovely book and exhibition catalogue all about Patek-Philippe. It’s a stunner!

Good luck to everyone. I better not participate, for several reasons. But it's a gesture that I like very much in a forum.

Unfortunately my brain isn't wired for cryptic crosswords.

I can just about manage coffee time crosswords, as long as some of the blanks are filled in for me.

Kudos for doing it and good luck to those with the brain power to crack it.

I’ve never been able to do these. I did get one easy one though, so I may retire at a high point.

I have had a quick look. Not sure if I should quit now after glorious success on 17 down, without using google as my friend.

Some look rather tricky!

Still a more useful way to spend time than looking at watch fora on a rainy day.

When I used to do crosswords regularly, papers used a small number of regular setters, and we talked about getting into the mind of the setter.

Dangerous place to be in my case!

I don't know who you are...
I don't know what you want...
But I have a very particular lack of crossword skills...
I will never be able to find the answers...
But what I do have is 2 Dollars and a Casio wrist watch...
You can have one of them (You cant have either of them)

I do like a good crossword. A pleasant hour racking my brain for watch brands has got me all but five but I am now completely stumped on the remainder. Hoping the usual crossword solvers trick of doing something totally unrelated may cause one or two of the others to spring back to mind. Thanks for the diversion Avo.

Ah, well, if it's providing some entertainment on a lousy day (it's persisting down in Norfolk) then that's a bonus. :D

Anyone else still racking their brains on this.
I'll be very pleased once the solution is published but also very annoyed I was so thick.
