could you do without a smart phone??

Post by missF »

friends are persuading me that i NEED a smart phone, but i'm still holding out.
i spend a lot of time at home on the computer so i'm not convinced that i need to use computer facilities on the go.
i've only recently started on facebook, and am not convinced at all that i need to access social media on the go.

(i can fully accept that it may be that once i have one i'd never go back.....).....

what do you use your phone for that's cool and helpful??
what would you say to convince me to go for it??

thanks! :D

Good topic for a thread.

I'm not a big social media user but with my smartphones (one work and one my own):

Emails
Whatsapp/facetime for messaging and video calls
Bus tracker app
Tapatalk for forum
Photos including watch of the day :D
Navapp if lost
Listening to amazon music
Checking exact time online for setting a watch!
Creating WiFi hotstop for working on train

My old phone will send texts. And that's pretty much it. No internet for me. Mind you, my tv is about 15 years old and sits on top of my VCR. So that's about as modern as I get

I wouldn't say you are that much behind the times, it is a VHS and not betamax I hope?

Great topic Lindsey.

Sadly I now couldn't do without mine...its just so handy having internet access when you're on the move, especially when trains are delayed or you're hanging about waiting for something.

That said, I don't use Fakebook and only use Twitter now and again - I use it more for Internet and some gaming.

I use mine a lot - but not for Facebook or Twitter. Main use is email, tapatalk (forums), Internet (news, flight apps etc), WhatsApp, and crucially Bluetooth music in rental cars.

I’ve tried using it for Kindle, and it’s ok if I’m desperate- but I generally travel with my iPad as well.

Of course, it’s also a great camera, translator, calculator, navigator, health (step counter) and a bunch of other things....

Using my data allowance to share images/videos/etc via groups in WhatsApp saves a fortune in individual MMS charges, plus there's no way to do a "group chat" using old school text and group emails are just painful.

So no, I need my smartphone!

You don't have a smart phone???

Unlike the kids of today, I can remember a time before mobile phones. But know it's hard to imagine not having a smart phone.
Some of the things on my phone:

Live train information, Uber, Google maps. I can't imagine moving around without a phone these days.

Keeping up with friends: I use Whatsapp and Instagram. Facebook and Twitter are installed but rarely used.

Strava for biking.

Viewranger for OS maps walks and green laning.

Alexa to control the lights and play music

Dropbox and Google Drive to have all your files on the go.

Wi-Fi analyser and Speed test for sorting out wifi networks

EBay

But the most used app is... browsing the web for this forum and other rubbish!

It goes on and on...

could i? sure. but i'd be unhappy having to do things the hard way again now that i know better. :)

email (work, freelance, personal)
texting (more and more now)
navigation (waze is a lifesaver, i turn it on every day when i'm in the car for police reports and rerouting for traffic)
music (streaming/mp3/satellite radio) (my phone is my complete car solution via bluetooth)
instagram / tapatalk
taking snapshot style pictures
adoption app for pets when i'm working in the animal shelter (pet information at my fingertips)
smart home stuff (controlling my nest thermostat, having the porch lights synced to me pulling w/in .25mi of my home automatically)
kindle (emergency use, like hanging around in the doctor's office, waiting for people who are late)
weather
travel (boarding passes, updating flights (i've had it save me with alerts and i could book the last seat on another flight before it disappeared))
uber/lyft

and lots of things that are "fun to do" that aren't a big deal (like looking up houses on realtor.com app or checking my fantasy league team or IMDB).
the "g" is for Greg...

could you do without a smart phone??

Post by gaf1958 »

Mostly my phone is used for "phone" things, call, texts etc, but it's also a useful wifi hotspot for my iPad (which I would have trouble living without) when I'm out of wifi range. It's also useful for tracking walking distances, reading/entertainment in (as has been mentioned by others) waiting rooms etc where I don't have my iPad and the magazines are rubbish! Maps are also handy when out walking, particularly on holidays, but for driving - in most cases in car Nav is just peachy.

When we retired, my wife and I dropped to one phone shared between us. It'd be harder to do without it than keep it :), as it provides some very useful functionality, but 98% of the time an old school Nokia would be all we'd need, provided it was one of the tiny pocketable ones!

so, so far:

= i spend too much time on the forum as it is, and don't need to be accessing it on the hoof
= i don't get many emails (and no work or urgent emails) so don't need to access it on the hoof
= i don't want to get sucked into social media so don't need to access facebook on the hoof
= bus tracker is cool, but i can do without as my time isn't pressing
= i have my much prized ipod for music so don't need phone for music on the hoof
= my flat is so old that remotely operating the 'central heating' is not an option
= my watch photos are terrible so i have little need for a camera
= i don't want to chase numbers of steps or numbers of miles in my bid to keep active.......

you'll all have to try harder to convince me i thiink!!
(seriously, though - thanks for your thoughts - it's helping to formulate mine...) :D
