cost of things in 1970
cost of things in 1970
I was just watching Call The Midwife, and Fred sold a pair of plain black shoelaces for 3/9.
So pre-decimalisation, 1970, nearly 4 shillings for a pair of shoe laces, Maybe I misheard but that sounds too much to me.
Anyone any idea?

No idea, Dave. I was 13 at the time and I don’t remember the price of anything.
For some reason my granddad had a box full of brand new laces so I used to cadge them.

Re: cost of things in 1970
I certainly remember going decimal in February 1971, but didn't buy my own shoe laces then. I do know that a first class postage stamp Christmas issue 1970 was 5d, so 3/9 does sound like a lot.

I remember 1970 as the middle of my foggy years.

Re: cost of things in 1970
I just double checked. It's episode 7, series 14 at about 3:40 in.
Fred said "last pair, 3 and ninepence. ".
I was flabbergasted. My flabber has never been so gasted, as Frankie Howerd was wont to say.
In 1970 you got a 3 course Chinese meal for less than 5 bob. Soup, Something with fried rice, and a banana fritter and ice cream. Those were the days. It seemed really sophisticated. I don't think I had my first curry until a few years later than that, (other than Vesta curries)

I was 13 in 1970 and starting to be aware of fashion! Not sure how much a pair of shoe laces were but I know that a pair of Squires Brogues (the footwear essentials of the day!) were £7 15s and a pair of Levi 501s about £6. Still expensive and my only income was 15s a week as a paper boy, promoted to 'marker-up' in 1971 and doubled my wage to £1.50

I’m just trying to work out if I’m reading the forum, or whether I’ve walked into an episode of last of the summer wine, or dads army…..

I think that in about 1973 a Speedmaster Moonwatch was around £95, and a two-week full board package holiday in Spain was £50-60.

I'm just wondering if it was a Ben Sherman shirt as well, Bob.BobMunro wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 3:24 pm I was 13 in 1970 and starting to be aware of fashion! My word, I'll have a couple of those watches and just keep them in the box for 50 years.Amor Vincit Omnia wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 5:14 pm I think that in about 1973 a Speedmaster Moonwatch was around £95, and a two-week full board package holiday in Spain was £50-60.

I have a copy of a 7" single "Tiger Feet" from around 1974 with a 49p sticker on it. Anyone remember the band?
I post a few watch pictures now and then to a little Instagram account - 16 followers and counting!
