Most of the time when I go out for a cycle or casual walk I just need my phone and no cash/cards, thanks to the convenience of Apple pay.
You're not the first to say this, yet I struggle to believe it - perhaps it's no coincidence that everyone who says it uses an iphone. Does a couple of mm in depth really make that much difference or do I just live in a backwards part of the country where sensibly loose jeans aren't a thing?

In fact I know blokes who have the standard "large internet device" phones plus a tiny and very old fashioned phone as well specifically for taking into "the wilds"; the latter tend to have battery life measurable in days or weeks rather than hours but still offer phone/text/location tracking.
Need? I've not used a byte of mobile data this year, that probably says enough. Why then do I have a phone that looks like a mini laptop on order? Because 18 months ago my life was different and it's been endlessly delayed. Now I find myself looking for a new job so maybe by the time it gets here I'll have a use for it, but I still haven't worked out how I'm going to carry it.

Somewhat unsurprisingly if you put a smartphone in 2G only mode and only use it as often as you would have used a classic phone it does last days, even spending hours a day hunting for a signal. A big touchscreen still wont bounce as well though so a proper phone is a good idea if you're going wild.

I kept my original iPhone SE as a smaller “out for the evening” phone. Stripped it down to just minimal apps to discourage phone engagement. It was a much better idea in theory than in practice. Swapping the SIM card was enough of an inconvenience to discourage me, but more importantly, the battery just didn’t hold too much of a charge. Oh that’s right, I replaced it for a reason! 🤔

A few years ago I contemplated going back to a dumb phone. I abandoned that idea when I say it would save barely any money on my cell phone plan.
