Call me Ishmael

Post by jkbarnes »

We went on a whale watching trip this morning and had great success! These aren’t the best photos, as they were taken with my phone, but you get the idea.

Whale watching was one of the best things I did when I was in New England. We sailed out of Gloucester Massachusetts so I think would have been a little further north.

Great photos! You probably went to the same place we went - Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary. I saw a boat out of Gloucester this morning, in fact.

We usually do this every summer. It never gets old.

You could have hit the southern edge of Jeffery's Ledge. It runs from Cape Elizabeth Maine down to Cape Ann (Gloucester). It is one of the summer feeding grounds for a bunch of whale species.

Or you could have gone south and hit the top edge of Stellwagen Bank which is probably where Drew and his family were.

Ha! You beat me to it! Could have gone either way depending on the intel the captains get.

I don’t think we were ever told where we went. All I remember is it was away from land.

I’m disappointed though that neither of you recognise that whales face and can’t tell me where they live….

it was 10 years ago last week that we were on a small ship cruise in southeast Alaska (out of Sitka). one of the benefits of a small ship is that when something cool appears, the captain can choose to hang around. we were in the dining room coincidentally getting a nice lecture about whale migration when someone looked out the window and saw whales. so we all went up on deck and there was a pod of 8 humpbacks. the captain did figure 8s around them for an hour and told us he'd make up the time while we slept (let's see Royal Caribbean do that). A few of my photos from that night.

If I was ever that close to a whale, I think it would live in my nightmares!
