Brilliant Lego sets

Post by Stif »

Hi folks,
I had a look but doesn't look like the forum has a thread dedicated to all things Lego... and for a huge group interested in tiny mechanical trinkets that doesn't sit right with me! :D

I know @jkbarnes posted recently about his brilliant Lego Fender set (which I'd love to add to my collection!), but feels to me like we're crying out for a place to show off our favourite sets and builds from the Danish wonders.

So, by way of kicking this off, here are a few pictures of the set I finished building last night - the phenomenal Lego Nintendo Entertainment System!
PXL_20220202_003616535.MP.jpg
I had so much fun putting this together (over around 12 hours!) but my favourite thing about it is just how much like a Nintendo NES it really feels - although a little smaller (around 0.8 scale I'd say), when picking it up it really does feel just like the real thing. The shape, the weight, the way you interact with it, just amazing.
PXL_20220202_003721901.MP.jpg
The controller is pretty much 1:1 scale, and although the buttons don't move, again it feels just like the real thing.

...and finally, the retro style TV is just wonderful - as a child of the 80s (back when a remote control in our house consisted of myself or my sister being told to get up and turn the dial  ) clicking the wee channel selector around, and looking at the shape (that big bump on the back for the cathode!) and connectors and other wee features like the speaker grill and aerial. Just brilliant - certainly the biggest and best set I've made to date.

PXL_20220202_003751998.jpg
So, that's my new toy - who else has some wonderful Lego sets to share, or are there any you're particularly looking forward to getting?

I've got a few more sets up on high shelves out of reach of the kids ("Dad's sets aren't toys...") so happy to share more if there's some interest in the subject.

Ooooh yes lots of interest.

I completed the ISS last week to join the Saturn V and the Lunar Lander. All of the space ones are great - ISS probably least favourite.

Next big purchase will be the shuttle to complete the space theme.

They are all out on display along with the big red rough terrain crane - which is an awesome build & completed model

Also got the Porsche RSR still boxed to build when I get round to it.

I wouldnt know where to start, my son has hundreds of sets, some are very cool indeed. The best for me though are the ones neatly packed away and not spread over the floor with strategic irregularity, designed to cause maximum pain when stepped on. 😁😅
Sorry not a very constructive post from me but the building blocks are there to piece together a colourful and entertaining thread.
I'll get my coat (been reading too many of Andrews posts 😉)

@dan_1981 - I would love to see some pictures of those - when I was a kid I had zero interest in City, Knights or Pirate Lego, all I cared about were the Space sets (I had loads of Space, BlackTron and M-Tron sets back then!) - always been a big space nerd so would absolutely love to have the space for those sets (I very nearly bought the lunar lander recently, then decided to just throw all my money at the NES set!)

@Stephen - my kids won't keep sets built up - they like to take them apart and re-use all the bits ASAP, so we've got a giant playmat with a drawstring - when done you just lift it all up and it ties up like a bag - really helps to save your feet!

I’m looking forward to where this thread leads us. I always wanted space Lego when I was wee but that was back in the day - there wasn’t much in the way of special pieces, it was all still pretty blocky and simple. I think I’ll go and check out the sort of ‘grown up’ kits that are available now... :D

My 2 sets on display in my study together with innumerable books on The Beatles, are the Saturn V rocket and, of course, the Yellow Submarine model.

Pics of my Lego Aston Martin DB5 will be forthcoming. I’ve also got a couple of the architecture sets. I’m a big fan of those.

I’ve still got ALL my Legos from when I was a kid with almost all the directions. I’ve got one huge container with 50 years worth of Legos in it, going back to the early 70s. I saved them for my kids, who only had a passing interest. I can’t bring myself to part with them. Legos were a huge part of my childhood. There are a lot of very dear memories in that container!

Ooooh, the Aston Martin looks fantastic, looking forward to seeing that!

Like you Andrew, Lego was always a staple of my childhood (although sadly I don't have any sets from then now!) There would usually always be a set on the go every Christmas or Birthday.

Dan - the space stuff looks amazing! All goes so well together!

Here are some pictures from my photo library of another couple of favourites of mine: the Lego Wall-E set, and a (frankly giant) Lego BB-8:
IMG_20180414_180851.jpg
Both of these were fantastic builds - Wall-E is another of those sets with some lovely details, and the whole thing just feels solid and looks great on a shelf!
The BB-8 is massive, and a lovely display piece, with some ingenious internal mechanisms (making use of elastic bands) that cause the head to 'wobble' around when a dial on his side is turned - it's obviously important to make your own droid sounds whilst working the mechanism ;)

Now to change mine to look the same!

Can I ask what are the things holding the different stages on wall?

3D printed mount. I bought mine from this guy, but I understand you can get the 'blueprint' and print your own if you have the kit.

I’ve only got one and it’s a yellow submarine. It lives in my home bar which I’ve named the Yellow Pubmarine and it’s filled with yellow submarine themed items.

I have a full size pub sign painted by an artistic friend that lives on one wall. It’s inspired by the original album artwork but features cartoon characters from the film stood at a bar.

I’ve also taken to naming all my home brew beer after puns on Beatles songs. The number in brackets is the ABV of each beer.

I have nothing built and no space to display it currently but I love LEGO! I was introduced to the bricks the summer before I turned 3 and LEGO is among my earliest memories. It’s been part of my life for over 50 years. Looking forward to seeing your builds.
