I love sepia too! It kind of turns down the volume a bit on the high frequency shrillness of the modern world. Makes everything a bit softer. Fits the UN well. And the Cartier picture is beautiful!

That’s kind. Thank you. I’m not sure that the sepia picture of the UN works that well. The original had the turquoise water and the sunshine, and the fact that it is a modern yacht doesn’t really lend itself to that treatment. A sailing vessel would have been much more appropriate. I definitely prefer the original.

Now here is one that does work. Some years ago I was in Kayaköy, the ghost town near Ölüdeniz in Turkey. A Greek community that was moved wholesale in the population exchange and resettlement following the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne. This must have been a beautiful Orthodox church, but it is now a bleak and desolate shell. I think sepia suits it much better than colour.

Years ago my first 'proper' camera was a Nikon F50 (I think) and I used to absolutely love popping in a roll of black and white film and messing with some coloured filters to see what effects I could get - I adore the way you can change the mood of an image through the use of shadows and light (I just wish I was a far better photographer than I am  )

This topic encouraged me to play around a little with my new muse though, so here are a few pictures of the Spirit, taken against the black and white images my (very old) Kindle shows when it's 'off'! Finished off with the basic black and white filter options my phone provides (with an added hint of a vignette - I always love how adding a little draws your eye into a picture!)

I'm having lots of fun taking monochrome pictures of my watches! Wish I had a few more editing options on my phone, but not enough to take the time to download additional software

For today, my Seiko Willard:

I’m wondering whether the black-and-white approach looks better on watches that are pretty black and white to begin with. I think blue dials need to be blue (especially the Twelve Ti) and with something like the C63 GMT you would miss those nice touches of orange.

Interesting thread.

I'm inclined to agree with @Amor Vincit Omnia that applying a B&W filter works best with an inherently black and white subject.

My C60 Anthropocene from a couple of days ago with the Onyx filter in my phone's editing mode (I've got a choice of four settings) applied.

I'm a bit late to this thread, but I really like the way that B&W can add real drama and atmosphere to an image, in a way that colour cannot always deliver. Some non-watch examples I've taken in the past:

I shall have to try taking some B&W shots of watches in future.

You’re a fantastic photographer Steve, and obviously in B+W too. I love when pics of real scenes become almost abstract. I’m looking forward to your watch pics
