Re: Birthday, Member Intro and New Watch Threads
I don't think there''s any compulsion to behave in any particular way on the forum (apart from civilly of course!) - being here is like being in the pub with 50 others, and everyone copes with that differently. Some people talk with everyone whether they know them well or not, while others enjoy their drink and listen a lot but don't participate. I'm of the listening type in the real world - no idea what comes over me in this environment!
watching you fail in your quest for a “one watch” has been great entertainment

I think that's the perfect analogy!missF wrote: ↑Tue Feb 16, 2021 7:56 pm I don't think there''s any compulsion to behave in any particular way on the forum (apart from civilly of course!) - being here is like being in the pub with 50 others, and everyone copes with that differently. +1 to most of the above.jkbarnes wrote: ↑Tue Feb 16, 2021 7:39 pmThat all makes perfect sense. Hard to argue with any of it. I’m of a similar position with the birthdays, and find myself only posting if I feel like I have en established relationship with the individual.iain wrote: ↑Tue Feb 16, 2021 7:35 pm Well I’m certainly guilty of not contributing to all these, but each one for different reasons.
The birthday and new member welcome ones probably for no other reason than I don’t see myself as a main contributor to the forum. Sounds strange but the birthday posts seem to be for long standing or regular posters, as someone who posts infrequently I feel wishing someone happy birthday who doesn’t really know me seems a bit insincere.
The new member posts I see as much as an introduction to the forum as a quick welcome. I feel new posters will want to see who the regulars are so they then feel they are able to interact in conversations moving forwards. As someone who doesn’t post that regular, they probably will have forgotten who I am before I post again.
New watch posts are different though. Personally I like to share my new watch acquisitions but do so in the (N)CWOTD threads rather than starting my own. I will comment on others posts but (and this is true with many threads) prefer not to repeat what others have said. If I come to a thread a few days old and others have made the point I would have made, I keep quiet and not repeat things.
Can’t say why I behave in this way, I just do, but felt I’d share my thoughts seeing as you asked
Even after 3 years on here I don't feel right wishing people happy birthday if I don't "know" them. I haven't added my DOB / birthday as a matter of security.
I'm a bit lazy welcoming new members - if there's already a few welcomes written I probably don't add mine.
New watch posts - I enjoy reading these but don't post about any I might have, probably again as a feeling of security.
My apologies if I've offended anybody in the past or do so in the future because of this.

I was just about to post a pub analogy.

Iain has more eloquently stated my views on these threads. Thanksiain wrote: ↑Tue Feb 16, 2021 7:35 pm Well I’m certainly guilty of not contributing to all these, but each one for different reasons.

I particularly agree with not commenting just to repeat what someone else had stated.
One of my bug bears is to open an ongoing thread in anticipation of another interesting post. Only to find “I agree”.

In a discussion thread I would totally agree with that, Brian. People waste an awful lot of words...and don't get me started on those who quote half a thread then add "+1"TheBeatles wrote: ↑Tue Feb 16, 2021 9:28 pm I particularly agree with not commenting just to repeat what someone else had stated.
However, I would argue that wishing someone a happy birthday and welcoming a new member are not discussion points.
Nor, to my mind, is complimenting someone's new acquisition. However, we all have our views.

Agreed, totally different. And I have complimented watch purchases but not entirely comfortable wishing a HB to someone which I have had no interaction.Amor Vincit Omnia wrote: ↑Tue Feb 16, 2021 9:35 pmIn a discussion thread I would totally agree with that, Brian. On rare occasions I have been posting and all set to go but I get informed of a post just been published and do I want to continue. If it says the same or similar to mine, I delete mine and move on. Even if it costs me a place on the next page up in the members list. Still trying to catch Kip!!

Re: Birthday, Member Intro and New Watch Threads
I have no problem with '+1' either - it's like nodding your head online. Everyone is allowed the space to express themselves, however they choose to do it in my books. Extroverts sometimes don't allow for introverts communicating in different ways to them. Anyway, cheers, this is the most civilised pub I've ever been in
