Of to order some of that too
Anchor Steam is pretty much the original microbrew here in the states. They were doing their thing decades before it was in vogue. I highly recommend the Christmas release if you can get your hands on it.
Tyke, how is the Hobgoblin? I've seen it forever here but have just never brought any home.

It's okay for an occasional beer, quite dark & robust but not too bitter, but I wouldn't consider it a regular drink. Same with the marstons & spitfire. We are lucky to have an independant beer & wine shop just round the corner, so they stock all kinds of ales from small breweries. The choice is huge meaning you could have a bottle per night & easily go 6 months without having to buy the same stuff twice.
Thanks to Tyke for a great thread. It has been interesting and enlightening (!) reading the recommendations and reviews. I will definitely be trying some of these and definitely not be trying others! I see that mention of lager is frowned upon and by the same token, i imagine that vino being off topic and not manly enough would require another thread?!?
Edit - thanks to loddonite rather. I just seemed like tykes thread as he has lots of posts in it!

Not at all.
Ignore the hairys and talk lager if you like
(note:i only class myself as semi-hairy so am allowed to like some lager and talk about it now & then...as long as its not mass produced gnats ****$ like Fosters)

And i'm not averse to a lager in the right place...
-ice cold Peroni + fresh, marinated anchovies whilst sat overlooking the sea on a warm Italian afternoon
-ice cold Cobra (bottled, not pump) whilst enjoying a nice curry
-Beer Laos -anywhere,at any time whilst in the country of origin
-ice cold Czech lager (one of the 'proper' ones),preferably in the Czech Republic
-ice cold 'any bloody one who cares',whilst lounging on a beach in Antigua (or any handy neighbour)
!
If you can read this you are too close to your computer screen....

You're welcome even though it was nothing to do with me, I just like BEER!
Spare a thought for Scooter, as he puked at the mention of one lager, so listing a lot will have him projectile vomiting for the rest of the week
Knew that was coming
By the way Mortis has gone a bit quiet which is worrying.......... what menace is he thinking up? Must be something good as I don't reckon we've got him beat.....just yet.
Tyke wrote:And now, forgive me friends for I have sinned....... had a pint of Sagres with my sunday lunch yesterday & it was delicious...... for a LAGER!
You do know that Sagres is a Heineken brand don't you?
Mortis wrote:That St Peter's brewery does a couple of nice 'uns. The Ruby Red is great, and their IPA is quite nice too.

Sorry Tyke, couldn't resist.

Nothing's forgotten, nothing's ever forgotten.
Mortis wrote:Lager is welcome in here - it's still a beer of sorts (as is stout, porter, etc.).
Wine and coffee should get new threads if desired. And so should whisky.
Oh, and I will get you lot on the Sectors, really I will. I'm playing the long game. Also I quite like them really
Blimey, Mortis has just 'outed' himself (see above small print)
Well, we won the pub quiz & had a couple of pints of Marstons Pedigree as it was the only beer in the place worth drinking (opposition pub). The barmaid was so sullen she almost soured the stuff, but it was an acceptably kept pint so shouldn't grumble too much. Bit worried to see half the bar was dedicated to wine pumps, not beer but I guess that's a sign of the times even here in the tough North.
Much nicer hostelry next week (which is why we do the quiz) so will report on something a bit better then.
