It’s a movie I’ve only seen once; I loved it but I’m not one to rewatch much as there is so much more out there. It is a favorite of my wife’s. She’s why I watched it. I think she watched it several times over the years. She’s been several times to that part of the world. The farthest north I’ve been in Britain is still in England. :)

It was a delightful story. The soundtrack was great. One day I hope to visit in person.

One of my favourite films. They replayed it at The Rheged Centre about 5 years ago. Took the family to see it.
Went to see a Celtic folk band, Imar, last week in Kendal. They played an old Irish tune called Slayne - or at least that is how I imagine it to be spelled.

It reminded me of the theme tune to Local Hero - perhaps it had some influence on the songwriters.

Oohhh - may pop the film on later if the weather turns. Have it on DVD.

We were once sent to Mallaig on our hunt for the filmset location, which is a beautiful place. However, I understand most of the filming was done on the East coast.

This is the only Irish tune I know with that name. A couple of popular hymns are set to it. Is that the one?

Hi Amor

I do know that tune very well, but I don't believe it was that one. That said, they did say that they were invited by Songs of Praise to play some music and felt that they needed a religious theme to their contribution, hence referring back to the old traditional tune. The music was much more upbeat last week, as there were five musicians playing, so you never know, it may have been based on it.

My better half spotted me mesmerised when it was playing and thought it was the Local Hero tune. I knew it wasn't, but could see why she thought so.

Either way, both were beautiful and mesmerising.

@Tonywalker

This is Ímar playing “Be thou”, apparently based on Slane. (One of the hymns begins “Be thou my vision”)

I can certainly see why you could imagine it was from Local Hero. Any good?

The audience were all captivated and moved.

Beautiful.

Thanks for sending me this link.

It was a special moment hearing it played live.

It's a film that I didn't watch when it came out as I was just a teenager and it didn't really have a lot of hype iirc, however it's gained cult status over the years. A classic theme song.

An ex-girlfriend's family had a holiday home in Pennan so I did visit there probably only a few years after it was filmed. I saw the fascinating piece on the film on the BBC news last month including the American couple who had moved to Pennan on the back of seeing the film, crazy!!

A great feel good film and an awesome soundtrack.

Slightly biased as it’s the last tune played before kickoff at Newcastle United’s home games. Generates an already incredible atmosphere.

Check out this version on YouTube, in my humble opinion, it’s one of the best covers of Mark Knopfler’s Wild Theme/Going Home:-
