I've always enjoyed the look of a sandwich dial. I like the extra depth and associated light play that the recessed indices bring to what I can see under the crystal. Not only do they provide a welcome layer of three dimensionality, but unlike raised indices, they allow for a longer hours hand without interference.
I also like the unusual layout of a California dial. It's distinct, it's legible, it's quirky! It draws attention with its irregularity.
So I got a generic California sandwich dial from eBay, took it apart and following some surgery, put it back together in my own way. The original dial copied a Panerai's way to much, so it got sanded down to bare brass. I engraved the minutes track, drilled the lume holes, sawed out a GPF, and brushed the whole dial with 2000 grit in a linear pattern. Silvering the brass was next, then laquer applied to the logo and lume to the holes.
A standard Seiko automatic lives under the dial, and spins a set of pilot's hands modified to match the logo.
Everything is housed inside a life proof 42mm case.
Thank you Panerai for your many influences on this build. Hope you don't mind me mashing them up like I did
