30th Birthday Present...

Post by dan1983 »

I have read through a couple of 'what watches' threads but i am afraid i need to start my own so i do not potentially hijack other peoples posts.

Its my 30th in July and i have asked for a watch. i currently have a C.Ward and a Seiko. The C Ward is worn for work and the Seiko for everything else. The criteria for my present that i have been set by the boss is..

Budget - £700 to £800 (obviously anything cheaper is a bonus!)
A keeper for around 10 years or so

So, from my point of view it needs to be

something that i can wear to work under a suit and then for weekend socialising (I.E not DIY / gym etc, the sekio can do that)
something that will still look good in the ten years or so so i do not get the itch beforehand to buy a new one
something that will last that long!
40mm ideally
round face

the rest i need your quality advice please!

Thanks in advance!

I'd go a C60 Trident, can be very classy, dressy but sporty ;)

I like this. I do not know much about 'movement'. Is the second hand a smooth sweep rather than a 'tick' ?

I have been looking at Stowa for the last 30 minutes or so. I love the simple design:

C40IPK2 Speedhawk. Classy for work, sporty for casual, right price, nice size, stunning value for a valjoux 7750

Second choice would be the C700.

Non-CW - Agree with the Hamilton suggestion as lots to choose from in that price range at E Jones.

The auto C9 has a smooth sweep rather than a tick and that Stowa is lovely.

Rule of thumb
Automatics have sweeping seconds hand. Quartz movements ticks.

Stowa have a great reputation but I believe that there is a very long wait time for any order.

As well as your budget it would be nice to know what you have already and any likes and dislikes. For example I dislike watches with Roman numerals. And your wrist size for watch sizes.

I agree that a C40 would be difficult to wear under a cuff. The C700 is much better for this, despite also being a Valjoux 7750 chronograph - it has a much more low-profile bezel. It also dresses up well, as well as looking good with casual gear.

The other obvious candidate is the C60 GMT, which is a classic. Fits superbly well under a cuff and is really versatile. A bit cheaper than the C700 too.

The Stowa is really nice too, you can't really go wrong with them either.

Ooh, a nice problem to have! :)

C9 and C60 would also get my vote, but that Stowa looks stunning!

I have a C40 and yes it's a bit big under a cuff ( but very nice watch though) I also have a C60 GMT which is better under the cuff and the C11 is better still , all 3 very nice watches in my opinion, can't comment on a C700 as I don't own one yet unfortunately :?

Thank you all for your assistance so far. I like the C60 but the below photo of my Seiko, i already have something in that sort of style..

So i am fairly open to the design of the watch. I am now looking at Steinharts, but i dont know if i could live with the planet ocean all day every day when its a homage to the rolex sub.

I have also found a local dealer to me for the Junghans Max Bill. I am very lucky to be in this position to have a couple of months to decide!

My small collection. Sorry for the tacky photo it was all i had to prop them both up 8)
