2024 Olympic Games - Paris France

Post by JAFO »

I just had a look at Eurosport, and the Olympics have already kicked off, as of Wednesday lunchtime.

Argentina v Morocco

Not sure where they are playing, but it looks well attended. :D

^^^ Interesting game. It was in St. Etienne.

I’ll be watching the football, rugby, athletics mainly. I’ll watch a few others if I’m in, and will studiously avoid a number of sports.

I love the Olympics and am really looking forward to these Games. I'll end up watching anything and everything (except the football), but the athletics is my favourite. In particular, I really hope Keely Hodgkinson can win gold in the women's 800m.

Keeley Hodgkinson is local (to me). There's a mural dedicated to her on the side of a shop next to my Doctors surgery https://www.leighjournal.co.uk/news/226 ... -atherton/

N.B. If you want to look up the mural on Google street view, the local paper has got the street wrong (Doh!) - it's Church Street, not Chapel Street.

I'm not much of a sports fan, to be honest I much prefer the events with objective criteria for winning - though some of the 'newer' events to make a good spectacle. I don't know why but these Olympics seem to have arrived without much of a build up.
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left

Me too. Who can run/swim/row/cycle fastest and so on. Swimming bores me though, and things like archery and shooting, though very objective, don’t make for great TV. I’ve little time for the “pretty” sports that are decided by judges, though I do acknowledge that the skills can be amazing, like the kids on skateboards and so on.

So do I. I hope that she will run a personal best, win a medal and stand on the podium as a result. **

** Which too many commentators and pundits would abbreviate to “I hope she will peebee, medal and podium”. (One of my pet hates - the main one, “to medal” instead of “to win a medal” has been around for a long time, sadly, but I have heard the other two as well recently)

I'm also looking forward to the Olympics, hopefully Britain can do well in our usual strong events - rowing, cycling, swimming, athletics (plus any others I've forgotten!). Andy Murray for a third gold medal....quite unlikely but a sign off to a great career.

There's far too many swimming medals. They cut back on the number of cycling events, but they seem to create swimming events for fun, just so US athletes can get about 20 gold medals.

I with you on the Olympic events I find preferable are the ones are the ones with a scoring system those of us who may not be familiar with a sport can follow. I can sometimes tell which gymnastics display is better than another, but I don’t have a clue how the scoring works.

It could be worse, we could still have architecture, painting, and literature in the Olympics. (I’m not making those up by the way)

I also feel that the Olympics should be the pinnacle of any sport. So athletics, swimming, cycling etc are fine, but golf, football, and tennis don’t belong. I’m sure athletes in those sports would rather win a the open, the champions league, or a grand slam than an Olympic gold medal.

There are 16 tennis grand slams for every one Olympics, I suspect a gold medal is more valued by many tennis players, I know Nadal has said that about his Olympic gold.

^^^ Maybe, but Nadal has won a lot of titles over his career, I would suspect Andy Murray values his one Wimbledon title above his Olympic gold,

There’s also an element of sports that have more high profile events having higher paid professional athletes. However I know a large part of the football teams are made up of under 23 players with one or two big names but even these players are playing for big teams. There’s something about the Olympics and the amateur spirit that these mainstream sports don’t have any more.

^^^ He won Wimbledon twice so maybe he values the gold more highly. :)

Of course Murray won the Olympic singles gold at London 2012 and also again at Rio 2016.
