I'm really looking forward to Josh Kerr vs Ingebrigtsen in the 1500m tonight. There seems to be a bit of needle there, a bit of arrogance on the part of the latter seems to be the main cause. They need to do their talking on the track tonight, may the best man win!
It’ll be exciting.

Did I hear a fair bit of American in Josh Kerr's voice? I assume it's made a difference.

I just hear Edinburgh (posh Edinburgh, that is), a familiar accent....did he go to college in the US? Not sure, but I didn't hear any hints of stateside. My hearing maybe not the best though!

Not sure. There are certainly a few features (vowel sounds and rhotic “r”) that are features of many American accents, but regional accents change over time. Compare speech recordings of the Beatles in the ‘60s with modern Scouse…a bit different. You can certainly hear an Edinburgh accent in there.

Wow great race. Kerr did all he could, took about 1.3 seconds out of his PB and a silver….but hats off to the American, Hocker, for a great finish.

Very disappointing for us Norwegians that Ingebrigtsen came in 4th in 1500m. Well played by Kerr and the Americans, though.

That lad broke the Olympic record. Fair play to him. Just happened to tear up the script as well.

Lopez, the Cuban Greco-Roman wrestler has just won his fifth gold medal in a row in his event, first one was in Beijing 2008, first ever person to achieve that in an individual Olympic event!

College in the US and lives in Seattle. I think he has been there since 2018.

Great race.

Kerr said in an earlier interview that he had dreamt the final and knew exactly metre by metre how it would play out.

I also learnt from the same interview that he wore dark glasses so that his opponents would feel intimidated and would not know when he was looking at them. Apparently they would get really, really cross with him about it.

On the whole I’ve quite enjoyed the games, though I think BBC’s coverage could have been better. Olympics Extra on the Red Button has actually had better coverage, but the BBC 1/2 programmes are let down by:
  • Far too much interview/inquest time by the anchors and pundits on sofas**
  • Constant rehashing of the same bits of action, often with annoying music
  • Too many prerecorded bios featuring athletes as kids, family, school mates, coaches, teachers and the neighbour’s dog…repeated ad nauseam
All the above when they could be showing some interesting action.

Also, I’m sure the BBC will have a cogent reason, but I can’t for the life of me see why they broadcast all day on BBC One, but switch over to BBC Two in order to show the news. Surely they could put all the coverage on BBC Two, or else have the news on BBC Two and the Olympics on BBC One. Not rocket science, to me at least.

** Except Laura Kenny, who just rabbits on and is cool and funny!

Deliberate, Iain. If I had put it in Curmudgeons’ Corner, I would have had to delete your reply.

Oh, and post-race interviews: “Talk us through that, Jim.”

I’m just waiting for someone to say, “I ran, I didn’t finish in the top three, I’m upset and knackered, **** off!”

Watching the sport climbing final. Much better viewing than the speed climbing, which once you have seen one race, you have seen them all.

I agree about Laura K, far more entertaining than Rebecca A, and foxier outfits too.
