Please also be aware that having all your watches out on display is a ready gift wrapped present for any wanna be burglar.

Not quite sure how accuracy comes into it. Perhaps you can expatiate.
Simple evidence from my own collection.

I am a relatively recent convert to winders, and in the past I would simply set the watch and wear it for a day (or two). I would always set the watch using an atomic clock and my habit was to check the timing at the end of the day. Often watches would be several seconds out - say 10 seconds - in one direction of the other. This didn't worry me at all.

Using this process, I often found I would overlook watches that required 'slightly' more time to set - day/date, GMT - anything with a fiddly crown etc. Of course, I could have got out of bed 1 minute earlier, but life isn't always like that.

So, I decided to invest in watch winders - nothing too expensive, just something functional with adequate adjust-ability.

Having all the watches on winders allows the daily selection to include all of them, without any setting issues. Having used the winders for a few weeks I started to notice a definite improvement in the accuracy. I would check the watch of the day against the atomic clock and often they were bang on - despite having been on the winder for days/weeks. I would then re-check at the end of the day and watches that previously drifted a few seconds no longer drift at all.

My conclusion from this (hardly scientific) experiment is that my watches run in optimal state when they live on winders.:)

Having said all that, as I am no longer working, I have all the time in the world to select/set/wind/adjust and generally admire watches in the morning, so it's all a bit academic these days.

Thanks for that response. I suppose if I had ever had an experience like that back in my winder days I'd have become a "believer" as well, but although I found some of my watches did keep more consistent time, some did not. I'm sure this is due to the various positions the winder uses in its operation - crown up, crown down, face up, face down, etc. As you know, most watches perform most accurately when in one of those positions - the trick (as the COSC knows) is in discovering that position. As a result, I came to the conclusion that I merely wanted a winder - not that I actually needed one for the "health" of my watches. I will agree though, that - winder wise - a triple date moonphase etc. is a different animal....

I have a pair of Wolf module winders. They lock together and can be stacked side by side and on top of each other, so as your number of watches grow you can buy the winders one at a time. They can also run from one power source which means the use of only one plug.

I have found them to be very quiet and have lots of tpd options. The other great thing I find is that the glass cover seals the watch in so there is no issue with dust getting into it.

They come highly recommended on the Rolex forum and I found them to be a reasonable price.

Hi marklloyd
I'm a fan of winders especially for watches with day and date complications.

I've owned several, including Wolf. In the end, I love the Orbita winders. Picked up mine pre owned as they are pricey.

Bought Orbita for two key reasons:

1. They are ultra quiet
2. Mine runs on two D cell batteries, so I can put it anywhere I like with no power outlet limitations.

Of note, my batteries will be going into year three in January. The Orbita only rotates once every 10 mins , so does not use up much power at all.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that, I'll take a look at them.

I'm currently hovering between getting some winders or a travel bag in the short term. Most of my travel is via car, so I reckon the right bag means I can take all the watches with me, wind them when I need to and wear the one I want. I only have 4 watches at the moment, soon to be 5, so that's perfectly doable. Just need to check insurance situation.

A Moonphase is next on my shopping list and I don't fancy setting that up from scratch every time - so purchasing that almost certainly means a winder too.

Mark.

Here is a link to the technology behind their Orbita rotorwind series

http://www.orbita.com/winding-technology/rotorwind/

If you can be patient, watch eBay.com for the Sparta model and bid to your price....like me, you will lose many auctions but one day you will be the high bidder :)

Plus your currency goes a little further!

I've just bought this off Amazon (haven't received it yet though)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Automatic-Displ ... tch+winder

I was looking for a new case/display and thought a multiple winder would kill 2 birds with 1 stone. This one on Amazon was a pretty good deal and although its the size of an oil tanker, i've got room for it and it will keep my automatics in good working order.

I will find out later this week probably but it will live in a wardrobe at the bottom and if the wife (and our other expected new arrival in late Jan) complain it wakes them up then it will be kicked out into a spare bedroom. but i very much doubt they will be at The Who concert levels of noise if i put it on the 'least amount of turns in an hour' setting.

I have the two-watch version of this and its dead quiet. Have it in my bedroom about 8 feet from my head and cannot hear it when the cover is closed.

Can anyone tell me if DesignHutte Piccolo winders sold by chw are worth the money? And I also noticed that there is a version 2 out there priced the same as version 1, any difference in mechanism or just design changes?

I have this 8 watch winder and is very quiet with the lid down. One thing I did find was that the large crowns found on the aviator/flyer watches need to be put in towards the centre of the turntable to stop them rubbing on the inside of the lid.

I don't think they're worth the money if bought from CW. There are other vendors out there who are cheaper. The winders themselves, I can't fault.
