yup thats one of the main reasons that got me into it in the first place, the SMP 300, made famous by pierce brosnan.

After that it became a fascination in the movement and intricacy of a mechanical watch, the pure elegance and satisfaction of knowing that you are wearing nothing short of a work of art on your wrist

Mechanics aside....I think part of the fascination comes from the way it keeps track of something that will always win. :problem:

When I wear a watch I feel special. If its an expensive one, then I have a feeling of self elitism, not in an arrogant way, just proud of what I've achieved. I don't show my watches off, invariably they are hidden by a shirt or jacket, but I know I've got it.

I do marvel at the complexity of so many small pieces coming together, and how they maintain super accuracy.

I'm not into blingy or excessive jewellery, so for me a beautiful or a cool, great-looking watch is a bit like jewellery.

Plus, I'm just fascinated by the craftsmanship, skill and artistry that goes into a nice mechanical movement.

Definitely NOT influenced by racing (anything where vehicles, people or animals go round and round a circuit ad nauseum is not my thing), cars, James Bond, or Steve McQueen!

Let's say I have a watch that's accurate to within 5 seconds a day. That's 5 over 86400, or better than 99.998%. And this little collection of mechanical parts, with a little daily tlc from me, can do that for years without major attention. And in some cases has been doing it for decades.
I rest my case. :)

Blimey, I could have written that! Maybe I'm a woman? After all, I have got very small wrists.

Hang on, I'll just go check....

No, it turns out I am a man after all. Thinking about it, I actually don't mind people racing round and round a circuit, ie athletics, so that must be the key gender-defining difference between me and asqwerth.

Fascination (of the History, legends and ability to make something so small and complicated work so well) but over the last couple of years that has been replaced by obsession. Lately, fueled by recent vintage aquisitions (including finally getting some family heirlooms looking their best :)) and slowng down with the buying the fun of fascination has returned somewhat.
I miss all the great things that may never be.

Actually, what I'm a real fan of is engineering and product design...

In a lottery winning world, that might lead to collecting cars, vintage aircraft, etc. - but watches offer a very practical and relatively affordable way to indulge. And even if I could afford the Mercedes Gullwing or a Dragon Rapide... I'd probably still want a matching watch to go with it!!

For me it is the combination of micro engineering and art. Also a watch says so much about a person. I guess you could say I collect snowboards also but I really only buy a new one to replace a broken one. So I guess I collect broken snowboards in that case. as I get older I keep getting better at what I used to be able to do on a snowboard. In other words i'm loosing some of my snowboard abilities. Watches on the other hand are the opposite. The older I get the more advanced I get in watch knowledge and the better quality watches I buy. Eventually I will stop breaking snowboards, sad day for snowboarding Lewis. The extra money will make watch Lewis very happy.

I appreciate things that are well made and perform well, be it clothing, furniture, or electronics. Especially in today's throw away culture, I like that fact that my C20 is going to look great and keep good time years from now. I do not love watches per se. I believe this phase is called denial.
