I don't think that anyone here believes that an automatic watch is more accurate than a quartz.

For me it just goes a little deeper, down to the soul.

Be still my beating heart.

I'm talking consistent, as for a beating heart I love the romantic notion.

I think you are right Richard, but an automatic can be very accurate - my C20 is close to perfect... I suspect that a part of the charm of an automatic though is that it is not 100% perfect! (rather like classic cars!)

Quite agree, I love the analogy. :D

What about hybrid type movement like the Seiko Spring Drive, the best of both worlds?

A 'classic car' engine updated with an electronic management system :D

thanks ianblyth. Do you know what its all about perspective, I had never seen setting the piece as part of the attraction, but I can see that actually now. From an engineering point of view i prefer the idea of an auto, but then some of my favourites are quartz only - just too many choices. not sure I could be bothered with a winder anyway.....

I have a timing purpose in mind, I'll wear my one quartz chronograph, but for every day I can't get past the thought of having that beautiful, tiny, complex piece of engineering clockwork on my wrist. The sound of the movement, the feel of the rotor, the sweep of the second hand. Love autos, but there is a place for quartz. :)

I love automatic/manual watches simply because they are intricately complex ways of doing something as simple as telling the time. Working in IT and on complex systems etc means my daily work is all based on the simplistic notion of time, and something that computing in general is based on. I like I can have command over a global IT infrastructure while having something on my wrist that's equally as complex, just for seeing what time of day it is...

I own a few quartz watches running the gamut from cheap sub $100 watches to more expensive Swiss brand chronos. There are a few upsides to quartz; they are far more accurate than mechanical watches, and they can take more of a beating. For example I will wear one of my quartz watches when I play golf.

However there just isn't that "something" about quartz watches for me. I don't catch myself staring at them nearly as often, nor do I get as excited to wear them as my mechanicals. There's something extra to admire for me in mechanicals; the decoration of the movement, even just thinking about all of the small parts that have to work together to keep something as abstract as time.

Mechanicals just stir my imagination I guess where quartz do not.

I only have autos and love them for the mechanical aspect as others have detailed. I had completely discounted quartz as a cheap alternative.
But then I got to see some in the flesh - The c70 range at the recent GTG and my opinion changed. They looked stunning and the new Jaguar one coming out really impressed me. So as they say.... Never say never
