Where did it all start?

Post by Amor Vincit Omnia »

Reflecting on recent events, new models and of course the news about Chris Ward himself, I thought this might interest some of our newer members...

I am lucky to own examples of the first two watches produced by the company: the Mk I C5 Malvern Automatic GWT (gold case, white dial (ish) and tan strap); and the Mk I C3 Malvern Chronograph SWT (steel case). Neither is from 2005, but then both of these early models enjoyed a longer production run than some of their descendants.

What I believe they do show is the quality of the product from Day One. Look at the two layer dials, look at the detail on that C5 Sellita movement. Look at the original CW butterfly déployant. I still think they are among the nicest watches the company has produced.

Enjoy the pictures...

Great pictures AVO. I still have my C5 mk1 and still think it looks terrific. It was one of my first CWs.

The journey started for me with the C10 (no picture at the mo, sorry) Another great quality watch which will be staying with me.

ERRATUM: the C5 is, of course, a GWK, being originally on a black strap, though I mostly wear it on the tan.

Both straps, of course, are original Louisiana alligator and therefore not directly replaceable. I'll keep my own counsel on that.

It seemed to me that we don't see these watches often enough on the forum these days.

There you go, AVO!

A couple of quick, not great quality, shots of some CW classic. Although not shown in the pictures, it must be said how good the lume is on the C10 and C3s

My first CW was an Aviator Mark II swiftly followed by the 2009 CW FLE C2 which I still believe has one of the nicest dials. Both were purchased in November/December 2010.

I have only ever bought two more, the 2012 FLE (scooter blue). My last being a Mark I C60, The Downer.

Very nice, Steve. Isn't the movement an ETA since it has 25 jewels versus 26 in the Sellita?

For me it started with wanting a watch with both the day and the date on the face. I liked the Tag offering but not the price tag. Hence my first and subsequently second c9 big day dates

I have a C3 too that I still wear regularly. It was my only CW for a number of years until I made two purchases in December last year. I still love the look of it and (without wanting to re-start the logo debate) as a born and bred Londoner I like having ‘London’ on the dial.

Definitely wasnt here at the start but the offspring of the originals were my 1st interests, I first came here with C7 C70 and bluebird as my focus after seeing ads and editorial in the car mags etc, I eventually purchased a c30 (c3 android in a dress), a c7 and a c60 300 (common quartz theme).
It's got a bit silly since then with numerous autos added as my watch knowledge and interest developed. I've now had as many CWs as any other brand matched only by Heuer.
Maybe there is value in a quartz entry level product after all. Bit like affordable junior versions to get you into the brand?!?
