What should I do with my other auto

Post by leoo »

Purchased a Hamilton auto a few weeks back and got a CW yesterday. I plan on wearing the CW regularly, but don't know what to do with the Hamilton and other autos I get. Should I wind it each morning? Or let it sit and die and set it next time.

Main reason why I prefer manual winds with no date! I just let 'em run down and reset when I want to wear.

It won't hurt to let your Hamilton rest. Just set it and wear it for a day every few weeks.

Me too, but it sure limits your choices.

You can always try a watch winder,

you can pick them up at a reasonable price if you shop around.

I let my autos run down and reset when I wear them. If you wear them once a month that should be enough to keep the lubricant moving. It is not advisable to hand wind an automatic every day as the winding mechanism is not as robust as a hand wound movement. I have a couple of watch winders that I use to excercise watches that miss out on a monthly rotation.
No more Quartz (except when I cannot resist).

Let it have a rest. It's mechanical, so all the time it is operating, it is wearing the components (at least at some level, it must be).

Surely by giving it a short rest, but using it regularly, you will extend the life of the watch...

I let mine rest as well, I don't usually worry about setting the date because I can't see it without glasses anyways!! :o0:

It's OK leoo

We call it 'doing a village'.

It's perfectly normal.....apparently.

You should immediately send it to me so that you don't stress worrying about what to do with it!

Now that is just being plain provocative!

To the OP- don't worry about letting that lovely little auto movement have a rest. The pleasure of bringing it back to life is part of the joy of owning a mechanical. Give it a while and you will discover the additional joy of hand wounds.

Don't worry about leaving it unwound for periods of time. Wind it up now and then or ware it. Don't get rid of it. You might love it to death someday.
