Wearing a CW in london
Re: Wearing a CW in london
Very true, why would a criminal risk so much for something that was only worth £500? CW means a lot to you and me, but in the eyes of a thief, they could bag something that was worth a lot more!
That was a bit revealing... No, honestly, I really don't have a lot of experience!

Wearing a CW in london
Walk around the posh parts of the West End and count how many Louis Vuitton, Channel and Hermes handbags you see, each worth multiples of your CW watch on the second hand market, and much easier to pinch.
Relax, everybody. London is not the crime den of iniquity the Daily Heil and Daily Sexpress may have you believe.
Ok, so don’t take sightseeing trip to the Aylesbury Estate at 2am, but for 30 years of living in and around London you can walk around with your mediocre watches totally risk free.

Re: Wearing a CW in london
As a Londoner who walks a lot CW is the last of any worry (if any) when wearing a watch. I dont even think twice wearing my GS of Tudor. Im not saying there arent problems, but I've never felt unsafe about wearing a watch in the city. I must be lucky.

Re: Wearing a CW in london
This has been an interesting thread to follow. As a number of people have pointed out, the fundamental issue here is to simply have your wits about you when in any big city, not just London.
I’ll add a point that hasn’t been made yet. There’s a difference between being a local vs being a tourist. Someone who lives, works, or visits London regularly is going to carry themselves differently than a tourist. When I travel to a big city, my focus is not on my watch but my overall demeanor and how I carry myself. I want to blend in and be mindful of not looking like a tourist, to the extent I can. To me, tourist = target. So to that end, I’m mindful of how I dress and definitely how I act. I’m not loud, I try not to walk around with a map in hand, I try to learn some local customs, that sort of stuff.

I think you can wear most watchs anywhere as long as you are sensible and are not flashing it around drawing in wanted attention to it. Was in Jamaica a few years ago and a guy was haggling very loudly for a fake Rolex which he then binned out of sight of the venders and put his sub back on. After a few drinks we asked him why he had done it. He just laughed and said everyone now thought it was fake so he didn't have to worry and for 20 dollars the peace of mind was worth it.

Re: Wearing a CW in london
If I were a thief in London, looking for something to steal with a similar Value of a CW, I would just take one of the thousands of phones, people hold out in front of them. In Abbey Road today, I'd say 75% of people were doing this.
Much easier to just grab that and run, than to physically assault someone for their watch.
I myself feel safe enough, wearing my Tudor in town, but, I'd probably just hand that over, unlike my CW which I would fight for, as it is very sentimental.
Regards Steve

Wearing a CW in london
You really don’t need to have your wits about you when in London. It is not an unsafe place for cracking on with normal life.jkbarnes wrote:This has been an interesting thread to follow. The only wits you need is when crossing cycle lanes.

Any watch can be snatched but I suspect the criminal gangs are trained to spot a limited range of very specific watches. Thanks to their distinctive design language, Christopher Ward watches should not ordinarily be specific targets. My Sealander GMT* did not go price+50% the moment I took ownership of it.
* Which I’ve worn, on my trips to London, without issue.

Beat up vintage Swatch Irony, C5 Malvern (the original), Swiss Military Swiss Soldier Quartz, Seagull 1963, Swatch Blurang Automatic, Swatch Cafe de Flore, Sealander GMT, Trident Pro 600, Fitbit Charge 5. Festina 8810, Addiesdive AD2113 knock off.

Re: Wearing a CW in london
I opted for the Casio in the end. Thanks for the feedback most have been good to read there are a few joke posts as I expected. I think on the people down playing CW as something to steal think of it another way it could be mistaken for a more expensive watch if someone was willing to chance it. It’s just my view but these can and do happen. Thanks

Re: Wearing a CW in london
I would, especially if it had a V1 or V2 logo on the dial
CW watch count - enough to keep me very happy, but always room for more!
