Watches in Aircraft hold
Re: Watches in Aircraft hold
Never put watches in hold luggage, not because of damage to them but too many bags get lost or damaged - or in certain countries- misplaced never to be seen again.

Re: Watches in Aircraft hold
Airline baggage insurance is quite minimal (around $600 or so) and thus you might be taking a pretty big, unrecoverable loss if you check your watches as you won't get the value back from them in the event of damage and/or lost bags. There ARE corrupt baggage handler's as well as inept ones. I once had the "pleasure" of receiving a bag from a airport conveyor belt that had OBVIOUSLY been caught/pinched underneath the carriage of a tarmac transport. Most of the canvas/nylon outer shell was at that point little more than burnt rubber and EVERY SINGLE peice of clothing that was not already shredded smelled like it at been used to wipe down the rear tires on a NHRA top fuel dragster.
It's not like your home-owner's policy would cover your bags in transit or anything

Strap a couple onto the undercarriage as you walk past.

Agreed. One pool/beach beater, and one for evenings. This from experience of taking too many on a holiday.reggie747 wrote:You're going for 2 weeks ? Just how many watches do you really need in that time ? (and this is a serious question I might add)
Maybe if you considered a sensible, reasonable number, you probably wouldn't be asking the question.
Go on holiday and enjoy your holiday, forget about carrying a shop window full of watches with you.

I go through T5 every week and I always put my wallet and keys in my bag before going through the scanner.nbg wrote:Another vote for hand luggage. At T5 a couple of weeks ago , all ok wearing watch and with wallet and keys in pocket. However coming back I set off the scanner and security insisted I put watch, wallet, keys, everything I was carrying in a tray through the x-ray machine, and as hand luggage was already through I had to put the items loose in the tray, with nothing to cover them. whilst I had to go through the scanner again. A rather panicking 5 minutes followed, hoping that no one picked up my watch/wallet/keys whilst I was in the queue!

I never ever take off my watch. In fact I am rarely ever asked to take it off at Heathrow even if the scanner goes off.
In the past I have refused to take it off to go through the X-ray machine. I explain it is an expensive mechanical watch then I hand the watch to the security agent who hands it back to me after passing through.

Clearly 14 watches are required!reggie747 wrote:You're going for 2 weeks ? Just how many watches do you really need in that time ?
Seriously, I would never put any watches into hold luggage. I always put mine in my hand luggage using a watch roll or 2 watch soft pouch.
I travel globally with work as well as holiday and I have found that I rarely need more than 2 watches, maybe 3 at a push! Usually a nice one for the evening and dinner and a beater for the day at the beach or pool.
And they always travel with me, one on my wrist and the other one or two in my hand luggage!

Re: Watches in Aircraft hold
T5 was ok, it was at the Spanish airport that they made me remove all - my pockets did look a little full and my Spanish wasn't good enough to be able to argue. I think in future I will go for everything except watch in hand luggage and just let them inspect the watch if they want after I have been scanned.paw3001 wrote:I go through T5 every week and I always put my wallet and keys in my bag before going through the scanner.nbg wrote:Another vote for hand luggage. I always take mine in my cabin bag. Airport luggage smashers are not to be trusted...
The one potential problem area is always Customs and security checks: I have frequently been asked to open my bags so the watches can be inspected, and on several occasions I was asked to justify my taking more than one watch -- taking many watches can make Customs officials suspect a traveller of smuggling. In my experience, this applies especially when travelling back into the EU (and particularly when coming from or transiting Switzerland).

Re: Watches in Aircraft hold
I must admit, I tend to travel with a couple of watches in a Fossil 2 watch travel case in my hand luggage.
