Was on a buying binge... but now the purge is on

Post by Jkpa »

It's funny isn't it? You spend a lot of time planning the collection (at least I do) and then one day you wake up and want to just get rid of it all.

Well not all. But I go through these periods of binging and purging with my watches. The binge is fully on right now.

And the Fab Five C60s are already broken up. The Ti DLC is gone a few weeks after I got it. Had a friend who was gaga over it so hey why not. I shipped it today. I'm listing the Bronze C60 as well. The Beast, the Yellow and the White + the C1 will be safe for now.

I also sold my Seiko OM which I've owned since 2014. I thought it was a lifer. It was not.

Also listed a Citizen and another is on the block. Sold a Casio G-Shock last weekend.

It's painful, but sort of in a good way? Get some funds back and start the hunt again.

I’ve done this previously and am starting to do it again. I find if I have too many watches, and by too many I mean between 6 and 10, then I feel as though I’m not wearing them enough.

I’m aiming for 5 or 6 which will stay for a while, 4 are already in the box with a couple still to shift. Watches 1 to 4 are probably it for the foreseeable future with number 5 and 6 being ones I may swap and change over time.

Sounds like you are backwards and forwards between stages 4 & 5.

Don’t worry, you are not the first and you won’t be the last. :D

I’m probably at 6, don’t think I’ll ever reach level 7.

I’m not sure if you’re old enough to remember this show, but when I read your thread this morning this came to mind. Make sure you play it all, past the intro.

There is a reason, subliminal, for the purge. Proceed and chase with the new watch hunt. You’ll know if you’ve made an error if after 6-12 months you keep circling back to something you sold. If so, that’s a new hunt to re-acquire. I’ve compressed my collection to add a couple of new pieces…and have yet to go re-purchase any I’ve sold on.

While I’ve not yet sold a watch, I’m edging closer to that decision. For some (many?) the watch hunt is part of the fun. Sometimes the purges are needed.

Truthfully, if I had the value of every model of watch I've sold and bought a second or even a third time I could order a ..... well let's just say that every watch I have bought serially is now staying with me, whether I wear them currently or not. Every watch I'm thinking of selling gets moved out of sight within the house for a month and if I'm neither missing it nor thrilled to rediscover it.... bags packed and going for definite.

My collection is in need of a purge. With 20+ I'm hoping I can find some low hanging fruit.

I've instituted a (fairly) strict one-in-one-out policy. I got a nice watch box, so I gotta stick to my slot capacity. My last buy -- a CW moonphase -- broke the rule, because I picked up a winder for it. Oops. I'm on the hunt for my next, but fortunately(?) its an old model. Helps settle the hunger to do a lap around various sellers and markets every few days.

As you may have seen from the sales corner, I've having a good clear out of those that I just don't wear anywhere near enough to justify keeping

They're all lovely watches, but all the others I'm keeping get worn regularly and these (for various reasons) just weren't, so makes no real sense to hang on to them... I've also got two rather special incoming of course, so another reason to have a tidy up of the collection
C65 - SH21 LE, SH21 Bronze LE, Cranwell, Chronograph, Super Compressor, Black Gold, AM 2 VEV SE
C60 - Elite GMT 1000, Concept (incoming), CWE Chronometer (incoming)
C8 - Power Reserve
C5 - FLE
C1 - Grand Malvern 5 Day
