VAT on sales to the US

Post by distantecho »

Does anyone know if CW deduct the VAT for sales that are shipped to the US? We have to pay sales tax and import duty at this end and, as the goods are exported, CW don't have to pay the VAT in the UK. So it would seem reasonable that they deduct it. I did email their customer service but have not received a reply...

Yes, if you are based in the US then their selling price to you should exclude VAT.

If you select to purchase in British pounds it does subtract VAT based on the shipping address. Because the pound is so low at this point you can get a really good deal by doing this. Even if you have to pay an exchange percentage.

Welcome to the forum.

If you are looking at the UK website of CW the prices shown in GBP include VAT at 20%.

Having selected an item/watch and put it 'in your bag', go to 'checkout', log in with your account details or proceed as a guest, you then get to 'Shipping' with United Kingdom selected by default.

If you change the shipping to another country, United States in your case, you will see the prices reduce by 20% to the ex-VAT level.

If you are looking at the USA version of the website with prices in USD I believe the prices are automatically shown ex-VAT.

I hope this helps.

The US dollar price does not include any VAT. When purchasing in dollars, sales tax will be added for your state, at least it is for VA.

As rkovars points out however, with the current exchange rate you get a much better deal buying in pounds. The price shown on the website includes the VAT, but this will be removed when you enter a US shipping address. I saved a considerable amount on my C63 buying this way. If you use MasterCard, you can get the current exchange rate here. My card doesn’t charge a transaction fee.

And don’t forget there’s a current voucher that can be used!

Thanks for the replies. The dollar price quoted on the website is basically the same as the pound price. For example a C60 Trident Pro 300 with a rubber strap is £705 or $865. In fact at the current exchange rate it’s more expensive in $. I’ll try putting it in the basket and see if they change it at checkout.

Thanks chaps. You are right, it does deduct the VAT at checkout if you use pounds but not dollars. No brainer to use pounds therefore, especially as I have a sterling bank account back in the UK.

That £705 becomes £587.50 without VAT. At MasterCard’s current exchange rate, that’s $667!

Factor in the £100 off voucher you’re down to $553 vs. $740 with the $125 off voucher.

Sounds like a great deal to me!

I believe CW charge sales tax for each state. I certainly pay it for NJ. If you live in one of those states without sales tax then prices look even better but don't forget to keep purchases below $800 to avid customs duty.

Did you have a voucher code to use? I hope so! Be sure to post some pictures on the watch arrives.

Yes, they sent me one. Ordered the new C60 Trident Pro 300 white white dial and hybrid strap. Seems like an absolute bargain at £528 after using the voucher and the deduction of the VAT.

I’m looking forward to getting it. The first CW in my collection, hopefully not the last! I’ll post pics.
