Absolutely, but the op does mention someone who makes movements.

I mean they want car companies to move factories. Surely that’s at least as difficult but may work in the long term.

Ah is there an original 21%? I was just reading the top line 10% I had seen.

There’s many headlines saying it all crazy but I’ve read other stuff including in the Times yesterday that seemed to suggest there was a problem that needed fixing.
Incidentally, I’m 54 and my entire pension is invested in the US and is tanking as we speak. I’m relying on my instinct that this will work itself out.
I see on-shoring car production in the US to be very different to manufacturing watches. The US has a history of manufacturing cars. That would be easier to “scale up” then starting an entire industry from scratch.

On “original 21%” / “10%” I think you’re mixing numbers. It is just 31%. This is the tarrif % that Swiss made item's will attract (whether they ship from Switzerland or, in CW case, are made in Switzerland and shipped elsewhere)

The 10% was in reference to if CW wanted to make their own movements and whole watches in the UK. Unlikely I admit. So nothing Swiss at all. I think all industries will try and claim that they are different. Swiss made movements seems unique but it is similar to almost all EV car batteries coming from China and Japan. Chips in computers etc. The iPhone is about to go up $300 I read somewhere.

There are people in the administration who have written papers suggesting tariffs replace income tax altogether. They point out that that used to be the case. All taxes warp the system. I think some people may need to consider this is the new system. The previous administration kept a fair few of the previous tariffs.

CW’s response is very clear. They will put their prices up tomorrow and see what happens. Honouring orders made prices is the right thing to do but could cost them a lot. Some have suggested retailers highlighting which bit of the price is the new added tax. I’m not sure that’s a good idea.

Keep in mind it is actually closer to 41% depending. The 31% is on top of the original tariff schedule. That is for Switzerland. China already had the original schedule + 10% from a couple of months ago. The tariff on Chinese goods announced yesterday is on top of those. Marc's video is very informative on this point.

His video was excellent!

Going back to the OP and No.6 in the comments from Vaer. He mentions there, that if they use movements manufactured in Thailand, that there could be a cosy saving. That's incorrect, the tariffs for Thailand are 36%, so higher than Switzerland. This could be pretty devastating for Seiko and Citizen, as both manufacture in Thailand, whereas tariffs on Japan are 24%. It was only in the last year or so, that Seiko moved their entire manufacturing base for Orient from Japan to Thailand. That could hit the brand hard. It will also make movements manufactured in Thailand much more expensive.

Turns out we all got punked? I’d be laughing if… well I guess I’ll keep my thoughts to myself on here lest I get my hand slapped.

Are you referring to this evening's news, Alex, that the higher tariffs i.e. 31% on a CW watch, are being paused for 90 days, but the baseline 10% will still apply?

As I indicated in my last comment, people should just take a breath and it should all be sorted out soon. Farer has already reacted to the news of the 90 day pause.

I'm still of the belief that a little patience and a little less panic will prove to be the correct strategy here.

Agreed with this point but due to current climate of extreme uncertainties it makes this more difficult. And so it leaves very little options with how businesses are left to respond.
