Re: The Twelve X (Ti) - Released

Post by nbg »

By the time this thread has run its course, I expect many posts, on here and elsewhere (I found a couple of discussions on the internet yesterday, where the watch/price were being openly discussed and the omega etc. comparison was being made :D) that…

Compare the price of the 12X to that of a new, grey, early new or lightly used (take your pick!)…

Omega, Tudor, Longines, IWC etc..

That is rather like comparing cucumbers and bananas. Completely different. The only similarity being that technically they are both fruits.

When I buy a watch my only initial criteria is what style of watch am I looking to buy. If looking for a dive watch I may end up with a cheap one, or an expensive one, it depends on which end of the scale I am looking at for that particular purchase.

If I am looking for a dive watch at say £4k I tend not to end up with a £4k 30m WR dress watch on an alligator strap.

Comparing on price only seems rather lame. As would be “that’s just too expensive for brand X” based only on the brand name or logo on the dial.

I do get that skeleton watches are not for everyone and that would be a good reason to say “thanks CW, but this one isn’t for me”.

As to pricing of the 12X…

I will only know if I think it is worth the price and the finishing is as good, as is being sold to potential customers, when I have the watch in hand. If at that stage it doesn’t do it for me, I will simply obtain a refund.

IIRC the C60 Concept released in November 2021 was £3,725 with the bracelet. I think we have had rather a lot of a thing called inflation since then.

So looks like basically they've put the C60 Concept in a Twelve case? Oddly, they found space on the Concept version of the SH21 for a Swish on the dial side, but no visible swishes or signing on the Twelve X dial?

I wonder if they've considered doing a version with a tinted sapphire dial, like the C60 Sapphire?

My only one but big gripe about this watch - why the metal strip that surrounds the crown????

What was the need for that?? It destroys the beautiful symmetry of the watch. Also - it implies the functionality of a chronograph. It's a detail that just looks cheap.

Despite my previous comment, and declaring myself as a former Bremont (x3!) owner and fan.... I'd much rather drop £4k on this CW than the latest awful Bremonts....

Something I never thought I'd hear myself say.

I've never been quite sure why a watch company needs to be defined by a price range. Surely you're buying a watch - not a watch company, or what anyone else thinks about the watch company? What do you think about the specs, features and design of the watch?

My issue with the price isn't whether the watch itself is worth it, it's that I wouldn't be comfortable spending that kind of money on a watch where I'd worry about QC, less than impressive post-sales customer service and recent and current issues in fulfilling pre-orders.

I am a fan of skeleton watches, and I love the Twelve range. The price is obviously high, but it's hell of a lot of watch for the money imo.

If this was from a brand with more "heritage", then we would likely be looking at 50-100% increase on the RRP. A great looking watch, and while I won't be ordering (for reasons @sproughton mentions), I am looking forward to seeing them on the forum in future.

From what Will Brackfield said at the preview, it's a SH21 with reworked bridges. Something about the movement

- being even more skeletonised;
- having more depth or different planes/levels;
- being finished by machine [by *Paoluzzo, Swiss firm ] instead of hand polished.

I suspect it's thinner than the one dropped into the Concept. Probably why the extra bit of bridge displaying the logo is gone.

* like @rkovars said in the other thread, I was more interested - during the preview - by the fact that Mike France said they had bought a 20% stake in Paoluzzo. Just wonder how that will be put to use for future CW watches, not just for this watch.

Didn’t CW release awhile back a pair of watches billed as the last with the SH21 movement? Is my memory correct? And now we have the 12X with a …wait for it… SH21 movement?!

I think we’ve been here before - this is the last quartz movement; well no actually, these are the last quartz; oh look, quartz!

As for the watch, it’s an impressive creation, for sure, but not for me.

I found this to be quite a surprising release. I'm surprised at how similar the watch face looks to the C60 Concept; like the mock up posted of the Concept dial in a Twelve case isn't too far from the truth.

Other random thoughts (surprises):
  • Surprised that it's not a v2 SH21 movement, given that the C63 Snow Leopard and BMF were the 'last ever' SH21 releases
  • Surprised at how little the Concept is being referenced by CW
  • A little surprised (although not upset) at the price. When MF said that it's machine finished and open release, I expected it to come in at less than the Concept
Not surprising: everyone on social media saying that it's too expensive, that CW have lost the plot, that you can buy Tudor/Omega/Zenith for the same money.

That is a good point. When the "XIIX " teaser email was first released, my guess posted in the other thread was that XIIX = 22, ie it was teasing the new "SH22" movement, ie, a newer and hopefully smaller version of SH21.

In the end it's the same movement with further skeletonised bridges.

My initial thought was to dismiss it right away when I saw the price. When I think about it, the price is not insane. I bought a titanium Zelos Mirage 8 Day for $3,500 (new was $3,900) and this has much better finishing and an in-house movement.

Now that I've thought on it, this would be the only watch with a SH21 I would want because it isn't hugely thick. I really like how they added markers to the lume ring vs how the C60 Concept was done. The movement looks great. This would be as close as I ever get to a Czapek. And adding a micro adjustable clasp is genius.

Would have been nice to see grade 5 all around.

Not quite right, Drew, the C65 Blue Marine and Snow Leopard were billed as the last SH21 before the introduction of an SH21 2.0.

Whether, as fitted in The Twelve X (Ti), we've got the SH21 2.0 is maybe open to debate. Certainly, the reworked bridges and new machined platine go a long way to making it an SH21 2.0.

It's probably more about evolution than revolution; if it ain't broke, why fix it.

The Twelve has impressed me from its release. It is also one I’m not sold on. This new release, however, just may push me to purchase. Well done, CW!
