Re: Other watch forums opinions of CWL watches

andyg wrote:WUS membership is certainly swinging towards an appreciation of CWL, but the "affordable watch" forum is so taken up by $74.99 price point pieces that CWL really don't stand a chance with those members.

I regularly suggest CWL's to people seeking certain styles and generally get an appreciative murmor, followed by a post that "I picked up this Quartz Seiko in Walmart for $24.99". I guess there is still a lack of understanding by our "wayward sons and daughters" from "over the pond" on real quality versus value.

To have my say on "CWL Resale Value", I have to agree with those members of other forums. The resale value of a CWL is pretty limited. Where a used Seamaster will pick up to anything like £1500.00 from say £1800.00 new (dependent on wear and tear), will a used C5 really get £200 from a starting price of £250.00? I think not. But only because the brand does not carry the same cache. Building that cache will take years, a movie star and sports star sponsorship and change the brand we all know and love.

Limited Editions are the only exception to the rule on resale value in my opinion, not including us, who regularly buy from each other and are generally happy to pay for the piece we want.

Anyway, who cares what others think? We know what we like! :D

I just picked up a C8 MKII for about 40% off new. Earlier last week I also picked up a Steinhart Chrono at about 35% off new. Both were on WUS and in like new condition. I'd say the secondary market is a little soft for the smaller manufactures.

Yet Nico has just listed four watches for sale and three are above the price he paid for them a few years ago (The 09LE is, I think, the same price it was new). So in fact a CWL isn't a bad buy at all if you can effectively be paid to wear it for a few years!

Not everyone buys to keep, quite a few like to rotate their collections and have quite a turnover so resale value is quite important to keep the money-go-round on the move. They get to try many, many watches that way, keep few and keep expenses down. If CWL are cheap or retain value they are more attractive to such collectors.

Please, nobody mention this strategy to my wife.

One of the reasons Hans started this forum was because he was banned for awhile from another well known watch forum for singing praise about the C5. CWL was essentially unknown then and no one believed what he was saying. The owner of that forum is now a member of this one.

Although I am pleased to see CWL get PR of any kind, but preferably the good type....I think you now will see that CWL gets many suggestions from members of other forums when members are looking for something in the style and range of CWL.

In the end....CWL lovers find their way here because that's what we are about ...CWL! Plus you have the freedom to discuss other brands as well.
