The Do Your Research Theme
Re: The Do Your Research Theme
I don't see at as a +ve or -ve message, just more inane 'marketing' speak which I can pass on by.

Re: The Do Your Research Theme
I would like to expand on my original post, but in order to do that, I would first like to see again the TV advert that I first noticed a couple of weeks ago. I am trying to do some research, you see, but I can't find the advert. Does anyone know if it's available on line anywhere.

Re: The Do Your Research Theme
@Kip No it wasn't that.
The advert I saw actually ended with the expression "Do your research", and something just before. I was so surprised at that expression. I didn't want to misquote the advert, but that was why I was equally surprised when you posted about the "do your research" survey, using the same term.
As I say I had created a topic and then deleted it towards the end of August, or maybe in early September.
I thought I had a saved draft with the exact term, but I can't find it, and I no longer have a recording of the programme I was watching, which I think was the sky football transfer show. (I watch sky on the BT platform, though)

(Sorry, your post seemed to disappear, so I deleted my reply, but now it looks you answered before I asked you! Spooky )

Re: The Do Your Research Theme
Very well said, Steve. The ability to discriminate and process, judge the validity of sources and draw independent conclusions from information sources is is vital. As a digression, in my little science world I often find younger scientists believing the answers that instruments give them without knowing enough of the theory to know if the answers are right or need some thought before being presented. It's something I frequently have to mention and correct.Amor Vincit Omnia wrote: ↑Sat Sep 16, 2023 8:55 pm You need to broaden your experience, then. One could justifiably say the same (or perhaps the opposite) of Wikipedia or Google Translate. Information per se is of limited use unless people develop the understanding necessary to discriminate and process.

Re: The Do Your Research Theme
@albionphoto I know precious little about science, but a good friend of mine is a very good science teacher and is always going on about controls, fair tests and making reasoned guesses.
A lot of my research recently has been to do with history in various countries. One very good friend of mine whom I see regularly is a highly intelligent retired journalist, but has a complete blind spot about the history of his country since World War II. There is only one version as far as he is concerned and he doesn’t even want to discuss it. He knows that I respect his view but also that I will read books and articles that are likely to give a different perspective – he doesn’t like it, but that’s tough. We enjoy a laugh and a drink together, and local food and culture, but politics and recent history are strictly off the menu. I won’t say more for fear of straying into politics.

Re: The Do Your Research Theme
How much of that is down to those scientists being inherently less experienced? Is that a trait that has existed in younger scientists throughout generations and would those same scientists have similar quibbles with the next generation?albionphoto wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 11:15 am As a digression, in my little science world I often find younger scientists believing the answers that instruments give them without knowing enough of the theory to know if the answers are right or need some thought before being presented. I'd imagine, especially in scientific fields, that people are honing their expertise well into their careers and over time would be more capable at identifying which results to accept or challenge.

Re: The Do Your Research Theme
I have a couple of views on this.
The first is that having done the research, potential buyers might go elsewhere.
And secondly, 'do your research' is fairly limp. A sort of tepid progression from being, 'disruptive'.
I just feel they need to move on from comparisons and just learn to stand up for being themselves, 'retro' and all!

They may well do, it is a risk that they appear to be prepared to take and does not seem to be doing any harm.
I much prefer an understated tagline that a 'boasting' one such as VWs "If only everything was a reliable as a Volkswagen" when VWs were certainly not reliable. And secondly, 'do your research' is fairly limp. A sort of tepid progression from being, 'disruptive'.
This is a fair comment and they may move to a different 'stronger' tagline in the future.I just feel they need to move on from comparisons and just learn to stand up for being themselves, 'retro' and all!
Re: The Do Your Research Theme
The line here was the one that got me. The end of an otherwise solid TV advert. I thought this came over quite aggressively. It's your fault you've never heard of CW. I think that carries over to the "Do your research" on the website.i would look for a different phrase.
