Re: The Christopher Ward Women's Range
The design and setup costs for a woman's watch is the same as a man. If the expected sales are a tenth the number of units, and the margin low, the prospect of recovering the design costs is much lower.Yvonne wrote: I am an accountant so am well aware that selling women's watches at a discount does not generate so much profit, however, what it does is contribute to recovery of the fixed costs. If CW does not have that contribution then for the same level of profit it needs to sell more men's watches or sell at a higher price - is that what you want?
They probably didn't make much or any money on woman's watches or possibly lost money, so it's reasonable to discontinue them.
Given finite design resources, it's obvious that they will go for new products that generate the best return. This appears to be 'boys toys', like 1000m divers watches with green hands, watches with bits of cars stuck in them, expensive new movements, etc.
Putting resources into woman's watches means lost opportunity to develop mens watches. The men's range was probably carrying the woman's, so dropping woman's will not make men's more expensive.
You can't blame them for pursuing products that are more profitable and ditching those that don't sell.
