Storing quartz question

Post by wymore »

Well I will be deploying again soon which means the good old G-Shock will be coming with me while my C6 and C2 stay home. My question is whether it is better to just leave them run or to pull the crowns out?

I don't think that stopping a quartz movement for a longer period of time will damage it at all. I have pulled numerous dead watches out of drawers, dropped in a battery, and had them work flawlessly. I also stop most of my quartz when I'm not wearing them, since I'm too lazy (and cheap) to get the batteries changed any more frequently than necessary. The C4 is the exception to this, as the day indicator is a royal PITA to set!

Either let them run or remove the battery would be my suggestion, depending on the length of time they shall be alone.

Pulling the crown will only expose the movement to unnecessary dust and moisture over a period of time.

For long term storage it would be best to remove the battery, as dead batteries can corrode and leak causing damage once they die.

So what would be considered long term? I'm going to be gone 12 months.

How old are the C2 and C6?
If less than 3 years old I shouldn't worry.
If 3 years or more then battery may go (3 to 5 years usual life, in my experience of quartz ones normally nearer the 3 to 4).
If close to this then maybe get batteries changed before you go and as Kip suggests store running with crowns pushed in.

Having said that I dug out a quartz watch that I know hadn't been running for 10+ years. Battery hadn't leaked and a fresh one saw it come back to life.

Best of luck with the deployment (it's actors who have to break a leg isn't it?).

I don't have anything else to add that hasn't been already said.

I would like to thank you for your service and wish you a safe deployment/quick return.

I would like to echo Bassmans sentiments.

The watches are not important here. You are! :)

Thanks for the well wishes and the advice. I will just leave them alone then as they aren't very old.
